Ah, mine are aluminium and have corroded/gone brittle over the last few years. I will have to see if I can get some stainless ones to replace them

Please post a link, if I look at more pages of kirbi clip, Morag will get suspicious especially as I would be off using super glue to hold my hair in place :avatar:

To be honest Rob I've just had a quick flick round Ebay and struggled to find mini clips of the type wanted, typing in Kirbigrips comes up with lots of unsuitable stuff so maybe at £1.50 a clip it's probably easier and less frustrating to dial an order in to Eileen's. I got my clips from London Road about three years ago but their website doesn't list that item for sale.:scratchchin:

Whilst looking a pictures of BR2 tenders and their little idiosyncrasies (yes I realise some may think a social care plan and medication is called for) I noticed I'd made a mistake in the build because the strengthening angle floor support which is located at the top of the rear wall on the coal hopper was wrong , I'd set mine too low. Disaster I though initially then oh drat !!!!! Then how can I get round this one without destroying what I'd already put together, the instructions say the coal shute to be located about 18mm below the highest point of the coal hopper back wall... when I did the dry run the coal shute was a very tight fit so when I soldered up the sides the shute wouldn't fit. When I altered the angle in the shute so it fitted at the correct back height the angled side pieces wouldn't fit, so I compromised and shortened the end and set a bend in the shute as the picture shows. But of course this was all wrong.

To set matters right in a bit of a light bulb inspiration  I cut some scrap etch to overlay the incorrect shute floor and continue the profile as it should be, at this point this mistake occurred because of a typo error in the instructions, the depth should be more like 11mm and not 18mm as stated because 10mm is the length of the vertical part of the strengthening bracket the top of which fits just below the arc of the back wall on the coal hopper. Then unsoldering the support bracket and soldering in the new etch piece then resoldering the tiny bracket and hey presto all seem well now, http://www.click I think I got away with this as a close shave:scratchchin:. Next time I'll know to recheck reference material as part of the problem may just be in the etches or instructions.

    Hi Paul,

You get a great sense of satisfaction out of your modelling when you have to think your way past mistakes - irrespective of whose mistakes they are.

Yes that's very true Rob and thanks again for your support, I feel happy now and have learnt much on this journey including how to spot pitfalls and work round them. I'm now understanding the difference between a Big Jim kit; which works for modellers at many different levels of skill and the Transport Age series which assumes you know your subject well and therefore don't need the ABC building book. To be honest I wouldn't knock these kits and suspect they are designed to be taken to whatever level of finish desired, it will be interesting to see and compare differences in their totally new kits such as the Clan, Brit and DoG or 9F.

Did someone say ....... Mistakes ....... I can do them. I think mistakes are great ... :scratchchin: From a forum point of view they are because along with the mistakes come the answers, and it's amazing how many folks will be sitting on the sidelines with an issue that they can't resolve. So ... It's good to have those aboard that can look logically with the in built errors that some products come with. Apologies Rob for banging my gums on your thread.

I really should know better :avatar:

No one ever learnt without making mistakes Toto... as we both said at York the other week, so if someone can see a way forward from another's error then that's really great for here particularly as the challenge I set myself is to build a kit which could be quite demanding. Anyway I'm sure Rob won't mind as I certainly don't on this thread. More the merrier I say.

Continuing with the theme of mistakes here is the tender access ladder which also requires a bit of extra work on it, I started late this evening as I'd spent most of the day in Darlington partaking in my other passion... morris dancing or more specifically Cotswold morris with the side I'm part of in York. Anyway I digress save to say that on the way into Darlington station this morning we were greeted with the sight of a B1 namely 61264 in LNER black heading south bound on a special tour. So the ladder is lengthened with offcuts of etch, I save everything you see and I have quite a few different size home made wooden platforms to hold and support things at different angles and heights. As can be seen supports and grips can range from simple lollipop sticks and clothes pegs to those all important mini grips, here the ladder is having extension pieces soldered on and the picture shows how I do this.

Then with the waste removed the ladder is placed onto the tender to measure where the final trimming of length needs to be made, tomorrows job is clean off excess solder and polish up for final fitting. I may well fix this item in place using 5 minute Roket cyano as it is not a load bearing item or structural, but now we have the five foot rungs as it should be.

Yes it looked superbly well turned out Rob. The paint finish was immaculate in the sunshine.

I am slightly envious Paul, sadly the only time I have seen a B1 it was in BR black livery...

I have a Gladiator B1 in the stash and Chris has her name down for one of the new Finney7 B1's for me when they are released. One of them will be Harry Hinchliffe, the subject of one of her paintings and I haven't decided on the other yet.

1264 was stopped on a red just outside Darlington so we all got a super goggle as the Pendelino thingy coasted into the platform approaches, sadly photography was impossible due to conditions. I do like the B1 loco ... well actually I like LNER loco's generally, they have an elegance about them as do the Stanier locos. So I'll look forward to following your B1 build as it happens.

This evening saw the near completion of most of the tender, there are just a couple of little alterations needed namely cutting some notches into the inner frame to allow it to pass the vacuum pipe and steam pipe assemblies which has yet to be permenantly fitted. I shall also install pick up wipers now the 24AWG silicone wire has arrived in the mean time here are a few pictures of progress. Next main job is to start the loco which will start soon.

Thanks Pete, this will pretty much be on hold now for a while until the chassis jig comes, I'm resisting doing anything much on the loco itself until then apart from probably laminating the side rods in readiness. The other thing I've realised is that the tender is actually a BR2A version and not the BR2 which means the loco cannot be built with the rear cab grab rails and footplate valance. Not a problem really but I need to check the very grainy Super 8 footage again of 75031 to see if she was one that got modified otherwise I'll have to check photos of Stoke's Class 4 allocation to see which ones ran in the later form with single chimney.
