I have a variety of locos and stock covering some 30 years of operation. So I was wondering whether it was possible to write a "timetable" (perhaps order of operations is a better term) which starts c1970 and ends c2000. Whilst this might be a side project for the non-operating season and I will need to research when various liveries were extant, stock numbering and introduction and withdrawal dates, it does offer an interesting challenge.

    Has anyone else tried this?

    Hi Dave

Sounds like an interesting but potentially very arduous project. While I look at my narrower era to make sure all locos actually existed and were in service at the time, that is confined to late steam early diesel in NSWGR and does not include interstate running locos. That is difficult enough so I wish you well and eventually you will have a very interesting and historical document.

    cheers

    Hi Richard
My collection grew sporadically after a year living and working in Sydney. I wanted to make sure I had a couple of locos I'd seen over there (N and NR) and really collected a bit randomly. I did run a candy only loco session the other evening which was fun so what I might do is identify wagons that belong to that period and run them. In short have mini sessions with two or three engines and stock all from the same timeline.

I do remember 20 years ago (or more) there was a British layout that always followed the stock changes on the real thing. So when a Class was withdrawn they sold all their models. I get rather attached to mine (even the troublesome ones) and doubt I cold do that.
    Cheers

    Hi Dave

I do exactly the same thing when I run my trains. Rather than run a selection of wagons or coaches from the same era, I run run actual trains as that seems to be much more authentic. eg, W44 the concentrate train from Broken Hill to Sulphide near Newcastle using 16 GC bogies wagons hauled by Garratt 6040 and assisted by 3642 over the ranges. Another favourite is the morning mixed service from Camden to Campbelltown consisting of an FO passenger coach, bogie milk wagons (2) from Dairy Farmers and an S wagon with a coal load and hauled by suburban tank loco 3115. I am anxiously awaiting the long anticipated 48 class from Auscision as I have three on order and with my 4516 will run the Parkes wheat service. While I am still short of a few coaches, the early Indian Pacific (Railways of Australia livery) will soon run through my Dargan layout hauled by faithful 4201 and 4206. There are many other trains to model and I try to keep it under control or the collection building phase would never end.

I could never dispose of any of my stock like the British layout owner you mention. In fact I seem to get distracted from other modelling jobsif any of my locos are suffering. I have just completed surgery on three Trainorama locos that were stricken with the dreaded cracked gear wheel syndrome. Very tricky but finally completed.

Best of luck with the timetable and I will post a few details of the Auscision when they eventually arrive.

    Cheers

I have seen the same on an American layout that models the current period. When a line side building is demolished in real life they even model the demolition and then replace it with a new building when constructed.
I agree with you that this is something I could never do. I still have my first locomotive. (Am I a hoarder or a collector?)

Interesting - I assume of a building is demolished and nothing replaced then they model an empty lot. I think collector is a better term although I have hoarding tendencies.

I am gradually trying to get to a point where I can run a NSW Tuscan, Candy and Blue era locos independently and buy some appropriate passenger and freight stock as funds allow. I like the look of those new Auscision 48s I currently have 5 Powerline variants (all different liveries naturally!) which might look a bit poor in comparison. But that doesn't mean they'll go. I'm a big fan of your Dargan layout and look forward to seeing 48s in action. Are they due soon? I only have one Traino loco which has worked faultlessly for around six years. In terms of actual operation I reckon a typical engine is only running for three - five hours per year (given I close for the winter) but even so since I learned of this problem I am running 4205 slightly less.

interesting comment about train formations. I am trying to get away from block freight working and looking to buy more individual wagons to have interesting mixed formations. Its not helped by most manufacturers doing bulk packs but those excellent chaps at Casula do split packs thankfully.

    Cheers

    Hi Dave

Just about to retire now as I am on duty at the Rosehill exhibition on the PFM1 display area. should be a great deal of fun. Glad to hear that you like my Dargan layout as sharing things with other members is what it is all about. Naturally your class 48 thread is on my watch list and I enjoy it immensely. Auscision will deliver their 48s just after the Rosehill show. They have arrived in Australia (as I am told) but no time to get them unpacked until after the show which is a pity. I have seen all of the variants as initial production samples out at their retail outlet and they are certainly something to behold. My three are DCC with sound and I have selected the running numbers of the three locos preserved and in active service. But all the others look terrific including the more modern blue and golds as well as the south Australian variants. I can see why, given the number of variations, that it has taken so long to get them finished. I hope to get a pic of the owners of Auscision with the 48s in front of them at the show but who knows? You are correct in sourcing individual wagons from Casula, particularly kit items which I find run very well if put together with some care.Joe Callipari has been around for a while now and knows what his customers want. Just right now I have my eye on (and have for a while) his Caves Express coach set. Suits Dargan perfectly and I already have the blue 36 to control it.

    Cheers for now

    Hi Dave

A couple of pics from the Auscision display stand showing most of the 48s. Yes they are definetely on the way and will be delivered to them this week. They had a 20% discount sale at the show and from their online store which they said was necessary to create space in their warehouse to receive the 48s.

I saw three of them running and they look and sound good.

Wow - they look so good. Thanks for posting - will start saving pennies now. I am surprised some of the more obscure liveries get modelled e.g. Austrac - but that is a huge range and demonstrates confidence.

They have said it has been their most difficult project so far and they would be very hesitant in the future to make so many variations which has severely impacted the delivery time. Regardless I am looking forward to the arrival of my 48s and will let you know how they go.

I wonder whether they go on gut instinct or do some market research. I'd apply the KISS principle personally.
