River Dee Meats ... My first foray into O Gauge

    During the recent exhibition at Rosehill Racecourse, the exhibition manager asked if I could provide a larger layout, so...., an O gauge layout was dreamt up.

    Basically I'll be using the three baseboards from my former Kelly Bray layout. Each board measures 60" x 20", resulting in a long narrow layout 180" long, 20" wide. The beauty of these three boards is that they will fit my wagon nicely, stacked upon each other.

    Some may say that 20" isn't wide enough for an O gauge layout, but with careful planning and the use of low relief buildings, I'm positive either of the plans below can be pulled off in a matter of no time.

    All the points will be on the middle and right hand side baseboard and they fit comfortably. This should make for an easy, quick build, as I have just under twelve months to complete... :)

    Either plan would suffice, but I think the second plan has better operational abilities. It allows for cattle vans, meat vans and open wagons (waste product) and/or a tank wagon for the oils etc that need to be removed from site.

    Now, I will ask you folk, what do you think and is there any way of making an improvement ??

    So, that's it for now... All I need now is several points, an O gauge loco and a bunch of wagons... Better get on to Hattons before we in Australia get taxed out !

    Gary ...welcome to the “dark side” it taken you long enough to see the light :thumbs:

    Second plan gets my vote, kick back sidings always add more potential running operation which will keep you and your operators busy.
    Will it be used with a fiddle / storage cassette each end?

    A fiddle yard will be used on the left hand end. The right hand end will just be a head shunt.

    No Pete, you haven't got me yet. I figure this will be cheaper to build than a OO or HO scale layout the same size !

    Now, If I build this, I will require our Administrator (ahem, Toto) to come 'down under' to help operate...! Perhaps he could bring a few more locos !! :scratchchin:

    One Dapol Jinty has been ordered as well as 3 x RH points, 1 x LH point and 1 x Wye... I'll pick up flex track here or use up the code 100 rail I have lying around.

    I go for the second one Gary,
    When you take it to the exhibition, you could possibly leave some out of date meat hidden in the back of the abattoir.
    That will give it some atmosphere........Phew !!!!! :lol::lol::lol::lol:

    The plans are in motion Gary. I'll be delighted to make my way over on the big bird with stock in tow. I like the second version mainly because of the side industries. I like the idea of the bi-products. Gives a lot of choice for rolling stock types.:thumbs:

    Your hook Line and sinker now Gary
    Time to look out for a few O scale bargains from Hattons or Rails
    You will only need 2 locos and a few wagons you already have a few wagon kits so not much more needed
    I’ve got plenty you can use any way.
    Just make sure the 9F will fit in the loco release at the end of the Loop :avatar:

    Really liking the second plan and the idea of a all in one industry
    Cattle wagons in
    Meat wagons out
    The odd Saxa salt wagon for delivery of preserving salts random open and closed wagons for the extras in and out
    I’m sure a tank wagon could find a use as well :thumbs:

    Another Bridge too far and Luib Bridge Mk 1 were both 20" wide, so its definitely doable.

    Welcome to the big boys club :avatar:.

    Toto, if you're going with stock, nae wooden boxes.

    The mk1 traverser is 20" wide as well (the new ones will be 24" wide - as Toto's standard 20" baseboards are now 28" wide :whatever:)

    Welcome to the big spenders Gary, 20 inches width will work fine until the time comes to modify it, Elton Crossing started out only 18 inches wide... which was great until I wanted to include lineside boundaries and then it became 28 inches wide.:avatar::avatar::avatar: Up by the level crossing where the crossing keepers cottage, coal yard and lane are situated it is 38 inches wide. It all sounds great stuff and honestly the pleasure from being in the bigger scale is truly unbelievable... just invest in buying only decent stuff.

    Always remember that from O Scale its just a short step to G Scale and then if you add add battery R/C the journey to the dark side is really complete.

    I'm voting for the second plan, much more shuntability. I like the thinking behind using code 100 rail, more light railway like. The only thing is it will take longer to build your own track and you have just 12 months, I know that doesn't really apply to the Gary Railworks PTY, but its something to consider.

    I have ordered the Peco Code 124 bull head points and a wye from Hattons. Would you believe that they were out of RH points (SL-E791BH) ?? Looks like I also purchased the last of their LH points too ! These RH points are on back order... As for laying track, that shouldn't be too hard as it will only be the straight sections. :thumbs:

    Gary just to complicate things some ideas for additions for now or in the future, a small addition to the length of the front siding would be helpful for making up trains when shunting for goods only traffic layout.
    Then if you ever wanted to add a passenger service this could non be turned into a bay platform and a part relief station building etc could be included

    Careful Gary - Chris maybe setting you up for something, like a small extension to model the forth rail bridge - ooops sorry that was Toto with me :avatar:

    I like the platform bit as well, you didn't say Era, Country, or region, or will that depend on the stock Chris brings up for the exhibition

    That Chris has a lot to answer for :avatar:
