The region will be an Imaginary LMS destination, where exactly, I don't know. I'll have a look into that side of things. Maybe I'll just do my usual Linden Ford thing and make it look like some where ! At the moment, my 3F is winging its way across to Oz with a few points, but unfortunately my bank is blocking my purchases from Slaters... :whatever: I need to sort this out today.

    Cheers, Gary.

The collection of items for the new layout has started...

So far, one wye and one left hand point has arrived. The other 3 x right hand points are on back order...

A BR 20t brake van courtesy of Kimbo, via ebay... Unfortunately the steps had broken off during transit, which hopefully be an easy fix.

    ...and one Dapol Jinty...

I had ordered some wagons direct from Slaters, but my bank kept knocking them back. I have a feeling it has something to do with their ordering system. I can add items to the basket, select where the items are going (ie, 'rest of the world'), but their 'Check Out' page does not show postage. This has caused a problem as I pay what is shown on the page, but there is no additional cost for postage shown. I'd say that my bank has denied the payment as I am paying the required amount, (less postage cost), but they are requesting postage which is not shown and it doesn't match... Confused yet ??

I have screen shot their 'Check Out' page to highlight what I mean. I have placed one item in the basket and you will see to the right there is a 'Sub Total' and a 'Total'. Neither of these have the postage added. Now read the circled text...

    Slaters Invoice.jpg

I just don't understand why they can't give a 'postage cost' when finalizing an order ?? :scratchchin:

    Cheers, Gary.

Might be able to give my Ixion Fowler a run on it when it's done, it's itching for some use.
    Cheers

Nice Dapol Jinty you have there Gary, they are a truly lovely representation, now if you are interested 47501 was a Devons Road Bow engine 13B then 1D until transferred to Willesden 1A in 1959 and remained there until withdrawal in September 1964. I am indeed the provider of useless information :avatar:

I have never looked into shed codes or loco numbers in regards to where they were allocated. Thanks for the info, but when I decide on what area of the LMS I'm modelling, I may just call on you for an appropriate number for my loco.

    Cheers, Gary.

Anytime Gary, I have a full list of allocations for every LMS loco that was taken into BR stock and the date it was disposed, even where it was scrapped and when.

I'm a great supporter of Rule 1 of our hobby whenever it come to loco's and liveries, however apart from the GER F5 everything else I've got or want are loco's that gravitated around Stoke on the Manchester Birmingham or Crewe Derby lines, so I'm really focusing on locos I've seen as a child or where sheded at Stoke 5D. Call it recreating the past but for me that's my Rule 1... weird but great fun.

More goodies arrived from Hattons today...

Now I have to go out and get myself an O gauge track gauge. As I stated previously, I have around 75' of code 100 rail to use, just need to get myself some copper clad sleepers, or as Paul had mentioned, using brass nails through wooden sleepers (coffee stirers) and solder to these. Either way, I need to get the track gauge first !

    Cheers, Gary.

I haven't done too much lately on this project, although I have had my 'accountant's hat' on doing a costing analysis... So, as you are aware I am thinking of laying my own straight sections of track, using up all the sleeper-less code 100 rail I have, as I wish to keep costs down. Well, after crunching numbers, I have come to the conclusion that 'out of the box' flexi track is the way to go.

I added up the numbers which included 3 x track gauges (£30.00 include P&P), copper clad sleepers from C&L (£68.75 includes P&P), Peco chairs (£58.80 (excluding P&P) : I would require 1120 of them as there are 138 of them per 3' of track), Brass nails, solder etc, etc...

Approximate cost £170.00... or $301.00 Au.... or Peco code 124 flex track (box of 12) = £87.50 (including P&P) $155.00 Au... almost half the cost for pretty much the same result !

Well, purchasing a box is far cheaper and it will require a lot less work installing, which means I can spend more time on scenery and kit building. ;)

So, someone will be receiving my order soon...

    Cheers, Gary.

Your comment that O gauge will be cheaper than OO gauge is intriguing! Very thought provoking. I had to do some research! RTR Engines ain't a bad price. I can see what you mean, till you get to coaches! And I thought OO RTR coaches were ludicrously priced!

I'm guessing you are referring to this comment "I figure this will be cheaper to build than a OO or HO scale layout the same size !". My thought behind this is if I had to build a layout on the same sized base boards, their would be a lot more track involved, buildings, scenery variations and more. So to compare them both on scale would be completely different as I could build this in OO on an 8' board and it wouldn't be as expensive.

At the moment, all the track required for this layout which includes the five points and approximately 8 lengths of flex track (I will buy a box of 12) comes in at a respectable price of £232.00 (less VAT) and no postage cost added.

    Cheers, Gary.

The RTR rolling stock can work out cheaper too if you keep it down to smaller shunter etc. Fowler, jinties, 08's and Hudswell Clark's can all be had for less than the average price of say an OO scale 37.

While I can see why you might think it of RTR coaches, but as a builder I can assure that there is as much work goes into building a coach as there is in building some locos which in many respects makes most kit built ones that come up for sale very cheap. The big problem is that most of us concentrate on the locos and the rest of the train tends to come along for the ride.

This is why such as Skytrex and Dapol got away with the most basic of errors when they first started producing rtr wagons. As happened in the 4mm world I think that many 7mm modellers have now got over the "oh great at last 7mm rtr, now I can concentrate on X" and are a bit more discerning in what they want/buy which has brought about improvements in RTR. That and of course more competition from the likes of Minerva (if you into GWR at least) who are producing much higher fidelity at similar prices.

You are right there Toto. I was looking at another locomotive (maybe in the future...). I had called past Model O Kits on the way home from work the other day and his prices for Slaters kits and Dapol RTR wagons are pretty competitive to purchasing from the UK and postage costs. I got in contact with another retailer here and the difference in cost of the Peco flexi track is $20.00 overall, between the Hattons price plus postage and the Oz price. If I buy it here, I don't have to wait for it ! Not only that, but the last time Chris (SMR) had something delivered by DHL from the UK, it took a lot longer than anticipated !

    Cheers, Gary.
