    Hi all,

I thought I'd start a new thread for another area of my Talerddig layout that I'm intermittently working on - buildings.

When I first started planning the layout about two years ago, one of my initial inspirations for a station building was Warboys - I won't repeat the history, you can read about it here.

Even though it isn't remotely "Welsh", I was struck by the look of the building and it was one of my first projects, and I got as far as building the two ends - if you look at the early pictures on my layout thread, you can see these as a work in progress.

After a while, it became clear that it wasn't going to work for a variety of reasons - it just didn't fit the space and there was no way I could replicate the ornate barge boards without which it didn't look right.

So, long story short, I eventually came across the Prototype card kit of Chalford station and thought it may work for my station. As much as I like building card kits, and as good as the Prototype ones are when built, I've decided to use it as a basis for scratchbuilding my own from plastic. I'm using the kit basically as a template for my own model.

I'll be reusing parts of the kit like the windows.

Another building I'm thinking of making is a model of the real Talerddig signal box - although obviously my layout is fictitious.

    Here's the real thing.

A quick progress pic - it's mounted to a piece of wood with masking tape hence the gap between walls!

What I have to decide next is whether to repeat the arches above all the doors and windows. It's a real faff to do but not sure if I should persevere?

The brick arches above the doors and windows are a big part of the overall picture and give the building its impact. It is well worthwhile persevering with.
Keep up the good work mate!!

    Pete.

As Pete said, they give the building its style.

Thanks both for your thoughts. I've decided to insert arches above the doors but not the windows - I think it's a good compromise between sanity and patience!

Probably a wise choice - you can add square stone lintels above and below the windows. That way you may not have a GWR feel, but look like another company. A canopy or the metal remains of one can also add to the appearance.

I'm still making baby steps with this at the moment. I am pretty chuffed with my brick arches above the doors though!

Note the door looks shiny here as the clear plastic I've used to represent the top window is behind the lower panels too. Once painted, you won't notice!

That is excellent Matt :tophat::tophat:, the brick arch looks brilliant. Well done, you've set the bar high, keep up the good work .

    Cheer's, Pete.

I’m envious. I struggle to draw that on a 3D package never mind in plasticard. Tried it once but no where near a result like that.

    Thanks Pete,

Due to an issue with the door delaminating overnight, I've rebuilt it with plastic sheet instead and added a door frame from microstrip.

    Plodding along slowly!

small ball headed pins do well for door knobs.

    Hi all,

Some further progress with the front of the building.

    IMG_20190208_215131493.jpg

The back of the building will be close to the backscene so may, or may not, be completed. I'll have to see how much patience I have by then!

    Evening all!

Bought myself these decorative canopy brackets to add some detail to my station:

Looking forward to using them, I think they'll add a touch of finesse...at least that's the plan!

    Hi all,

Chimneys: they're just boring bits that stick out of roofs aren't they?

This little b***er has actually taken me three nights of modelling, and this is only the smaller single stack!

I've built it around a core of thick plastic sheet and then overlayed it with layers of SE Finecast bricks.

I've made every effort to chamfer the edges to reduce the edges of the embossed sheet showing but it's not perfect.

Hopefully I'll use the cast chimney pots that came with the kit.

    They look very commendable

When you say about the chamfer, where do you mean? The only chamfer I would expect would be where your thick layer steps down one. The top ones are spot on!
    The edges are  too..

    Look forward to painting :)

    Hi Andy,

I've actually chamfered each part including the sides. Very fiddly though!

    Morning all!

Progress has slowed recently as interest has waned and time has been scarce. Some unexpected free time last night enabled me to do a little work.

Here we see the station building roughly in position on the layout. My original intention was to fully model the rear of the building too but, given how close it'll be to the backscene, I'm glad I didn't bother!

What track are you using? Despite knowing the original model was OO, the track looks like O gauge? An illusion? :giggle:

Ah, well that would be telling...

    Actually it's C&L and it's definitely 00 gauge!

    Ah that be why!

Looking good. How did you do the arched bricks? Is it from a pack or hand placed individual?
