Hi and to the forum Sandy, glad you joined us, we are a friendly bunch and enjoy good banter and a kit of modeling too. regards, York Paul
Hi, glad to be aboard. I'm a newbe and am trying to resurrect the Triang train set that I bought for my son 40 plus years ago. I found it in a box last year. My plan is to model the layout somewhere in the West Highlands. BTW, I am a Scot living in Austin, TX. My hobby is woodworking so details are not (usually) a problem. I'm just looking for any hints and tips that I can find. My locos both run and I had chips inserted on my last trip to England. I plan to scratch build where possible. Sandy
Sandy and welcome to the forum from a cold but sunny Dundee (well it was sunny a few hours ago). So will that be a NBR or HR biased railway ? Paul
Hi Paul, to answer your question, neither. The trains and coaches that I inherited all have British Railways logos on the side so I thought BR in the late 60's. I also found a Railway Modeller in the box from April 1976 and it has plans for Newtonmore and Plockton so I plan to use these as a basis for my stations. One signal box will be based on Clachnaharry, because it's quite small and the other box will be based on Murthly. We visited friends in Murthly a few years ago and I thought it look interesting and a bit sad. As a kid I lived close to there. The layout will be 8ft x 4ft approx with a typical loop, a few sidings and a tunnel. I created a layout using SCRAM and I think i can include all that. Am I being too ambitious? I'll probably restrict my trees to fir, pine and silver birch. Not a lot of info on making silver birches. Can you point me somewhere? We visited the VA in Dundee last year while on vacation. What an amazing building! I am originally from Kirriemuir but left to go to university. Never went back as there was no call for high-tech engineers in Kirrie. Been in the States for 40 years. Sandy
An interesting project Sandy! I used to own a Triang set many years ago, I wish I still had it as they are getting collectable now. A friend collects them and now has a sizeable collection. I know very little of Scottish railways, I've always been interested in LNER lines and industrials. As for trees, many members here will no doubt give loads of advise, mine would be to read as much on the subject as possible. Gordon Gravett has written a few books on building stuff two of which includes tree building whether they have silver birch trees in I don't know. It's always recommended to use photos when weathering or building models to get the detail right, I can't see trees being any different. Anyway, keep us informed as you go, we love lots of photos Pete.
Look under " modelling the manmade and natural environment " and create a post under scenic. That should be a good starting point for your trees. Cheers Toto
