Well it's official I have finally moved over to 7mm. I treat myself today to my first 7mm wagon which is the Dapol 10 ton Banana van.
Well done Mark and a lovely choice of wagon... you will find a whole new world opens up as you move into the larger scale which is much more prototypical of the real thing ... obviously never dissing the 4mm crew here as they say its each to their own. Best of luck mate and let us know when you buy your first loco.
go for it then Mark... it will certainly compliment the SR banana van you have and Moderator Keith will be your bestest friend ... he is well into Southern.
The Dapol O gauge Terrier is a great loco. I have one. Just noticed the emblem is the wrong way round or was it wrong on this particular loco. I know some were.
and mine - very nice runner, just dropped in a 21 pin decoder and away it went. Not as easy as an Class 08 DCC conversion - that one is a lesson for all manufacturers on how a DCC ready loco should - literally, lift a hatch on the top of the body swap the blanking plate for a decoder and pop the lid back on, so simple even Toto can do it. The wagons weather up nicely as well with just a wash and a few wethering powders does that mean we will need to change your name to "Mark4mm and an extra bit" Paul
I'm so tempted to purchase the terrier this week. See what readies I have spare. Paul my username is a tad strange now.
If you decide you want to change it you can, just let me know and we'll see what we can do. Mind you with Mark4mm you can go on about how it was in your old days as 4mm is now so retro - I sure I just heard the grenade pins bouncing on the floor Paul
How about "Rubber Gauger Mark"? Might have to change mine to "Rubber Gauger Keith"! Seriously Mark, well done on the Terrier, it's one I'm also contemplating, though not decided yet which livery. I've almost finished my 'Southern BY 4 wheel Brake van' so I'll be posting a pic of that soon. Keith.
You just wait til you start kit building locos... it'll happen don't kid yourself it won't... I know a grand chap here who will encourage you to take a crack at a rebuilt Merchant Navy class.
Rebuilt - have they never heard of right first time, mind you once the Southern railways lost thier Scottish design guru's, they seemed to decend into long rectangular tubes, whether that was steam, diesel or electric Paul - one of the other ones
If you are keen on kit building wagons, check out the range from Slaters and Parkside. There are some very nice kits available and they have much more detail (underneath) than that of Dapol... I will say that the Dapol engines are a bargain. I purchased my four when they were on special (2 x Jinties, 1 x 57XX, 1 x 64XX plus the Autocoach). I also purchased the Heljan Class 128 DPU when it was on sale. The kit wagons come up nicely with some judicial weathering. These are mostly Parkside kits... Enjoy your new found fun ! Cheers, Gary.
Very nice looking wagon kit builds. I'm going to offer my terrier this Friday so I will be like a little kid waiting for something to arrive. I think I will eventually get round to building kits.
Thank you Mark7mm... The anticipation grows whilst waiting for a loco to arrive ! I know as I ordered a HO model from the USA back on the 5th Jan..., hopefully be here this week as I know it has landed in Sydney... Check out the undercarriage detail on this Parkside kit... Now check out the lack of detail on Dapol's offering... Worlds apart ! I will add that you do require a lot of patience when putting the brake rigging together.... Cheers, Gary.
I guess it all depends where your main interest lies, there is no denying that Parkside have much more detail underneath (that you have to fit yourself!) This also is true of most kit built stock. But, when do you actually see it, it's not that visible when you are shunting the wagons in the goods yard. So are these going in a display cabinet, or are they going to be used on a working model railway?
Good point Jeff. It all depends on your preference. I'm only purchasing the Dapol wagons because it helps me get into O gauge without any hassle. Then as time goes by I might build the odd one of two wagons only to use and not as shelf queens.
I built a brake van, can’t remember what make, but the braking gear underneath was so complicated I gave up in the end and just added a bit. Absolutely impossible to see on the track on not really clearly visible on display. My Dapol RTR wagons have pretty good detail underneath.
