Certainly any wood paint or wood stain needs taking off as this is probably a late addition, the colour variation will have happened due to UV light exposure over time. Otherwise any original shellac can be retained and renovated with a fresh coat and good polish.

What a fantastic result Mossy, really impressive in dedication and skill with using a process which is an art in itself... if I may say so.:tophat::tophat::tophat::tophat::thumbup:

Andy - probably better to display the fonts in Word, then take a snapshot.

I’m just on snap break on night shift trying to down load them and install on the lap top..
Doesn’t help that I’m now using sons laptop as blew the other one up with overpowering the processor with 3D models!
And guess what.. we don’t have office installed..

So will see in 123D text picks up the fonts (should do as I installed the LMS Signalbox font! )

Grota Sans was the only one I could get to work….

    IMG_5449.jpeg
    It’s not perfect…
Looking at the left hand side, C is too rounded and there needs to be more spacing in the word LINE. But that is easily sorted..

    image.jpg
noting here the middle of the E should tuck in slightly. I’m not sure re the D in down…. I have photos of at least 6 different block instrument faces and each one differs, so I wonder if it was what ever Letraset they had kicking about at the time :avatar:
I may have to just settle on a close approx between them all and suck it..

I suspect the original wordings were all hand drawn on with ink by highly skilled caligraphers employed at Tyers, very much doubt they ever had Letraset in those days. Each "artist" caligrapher would have their own respective style of application and would work from a standard letter format guide.

The letraset reference was more a joke than genuine.. I’m aware it probably pre dates letraset rub on letters… just made me smile as someone elsewhere earlier on last night said that was how they restored theirs.
The larger lettering on mine that has been identified as being the wrong font looks to have been restored previously with Letraset as they are now cracking.. not something paint would have done.

Not seen my standard of painting - if you leave it long enough it'll crack, or was that 101 interogation methods for dummies :avatar:

Lidl's had a caligraphy set for beginners on sale today ..........

    Yorkie Paul.

I came to the same conclusion when I created transfers for some of me NER wagon, in the end it came down to best fit. The only difference was most of the lettering needed was tiny and could barely be seen.

The thing is, As i have said to Mossy, if it was hand painted we wont get an exact match, just a close approximation, and frankly so long as it doesnt look "too modern" as has been said else where re the current font used on some parts, I will be happy. It will likely never be that close to another example to be a side by side comparison, so as long as we have the dimensions about right (which I am more than confident Mossy has) and the text is in the correct place, I'll go with that.

One think Mossy and I haven't discussed is the actual colours of the red and green. We may at the moment be using the bank present colours on Fusion. And hen they may adjust slightly when printed. Its very much a guessing game at this point. But, get it right, and there may be others who may also wan copies to repair elsewhere. (this time next year rodders, we could be millionaires...)

47 was our door number when I was a youngster. It is also the reverse of my age. That’s probably why I can recall it.

Whilst waiting for other bits to happen, I have been playing with the computer version. This has enabled me to take a look at how it will look using @Mossy 's artwork that he has kindly drawn up for me so I can make new waterslide transfers for the front panel where the old ones have crumbled away.

Ive also added a signal box name plate. This is showing it with the glass removed.

    And with glass.

Next is to draw up the metal cover bracket and the needle pointers to complete the front.

I'm sure that Rob, Mossy and Paul will be pleased to know that the fabric bump stops and the face plate holes were drawn in fusion 360 !! (i'm like BR, getting there!)

You could argue that with Leek Yard displayed there this instrument came out of the old Leekbrook North box which was abolished in 1947.
