I see you have an electricians cure for constipation - a mathematician would work it out with a pencil, but Toto has to have 100W soldering iron :avatar:

And piccies of them in action

Amazon had the 8" version listed a few weeks ago at around the £60 mark Toto.

    Hi Toto,

I must admit, if I was to buy another I would plump for the 14" version rather than the 8".

I might be wrong but it doesn't seem that much bigger (or more useful) than the 5.5" version that I have. You will have to offer a recommendation once you have used both of them.

The 8 inch version arrived and was picked up from the post office today. I think they will be big enough for most eventualities.

    Great stuff.

Does the extra 2 1/2" make an appreciable difference?

    Hi Rob,

I think for the length of the pieces in some of the kits I'm looking at, it may be the difference between bending the piece in one hit or having to work along the piece in two goes. Time will tell.

    Cheers

I think your right Rob, I've decided to go for the largest one I can obtain over here at a reasonable cost. Although I was able to build the bogie bolster wagon moving my oo Gauge jig along the length of the solebars, the larger jig would have made life so much easier.
So I've gone for the one below.

I've a couple more bolster wagons to build so will report back on how this jig worked out.

Not at all. It's the first link I've seen to a 300 mm version. It was just a matter of time.

    Thanks for the link.

I got it to help with a PE colliery headstock I'm attempting to build but I'm not sure if it's beyond my modelling skills now I've seen all the parts. :hammer:

I saw a colliery kit a while back and it looked quite a fine kit. It was designed by a uk retailer but I can't mind who. It looked a beautiful kit and very intricate.

Maybe ..... Like me .... You need to start of on something simpler and build your confidence up. The kit will still be there in six months time. You have given yourself a good chance of success by investing in a quality building aid to get the bends nice and square. You just need to get a bit more confident with your soldering techniques.

I'm new to soldering but one thing I have learned very quickly is you do not need a lot of solder on these kits. In fact .... Quite the opposite. The trick is being able to get it where you need it. It takes time and practice.

I like a small bit in the iron as well. It makes it easier to see and restrict the size of the area you are making contact with.

There are few kit building threads going around at the moment so you have come at the right time. Feel free to jump in and ask questions. There are some very talented members in this area who will be only to happy to help and advise.

    Cheers and again welcome aboard

    Toto

Many thanks for the advice, I think I'm going to leave it for a while. I have have already built one using Evergreen styrene which looks ok but as all collieries had to have 2 headstocks I thought I would try the PE one from Langley Models. It is a nice kit but the instructions are very limited.I have decided now that I am going to build my very first model railway and joined the forum to see if I could get a few tips.

Yep ..... Langley models. That's the one ...... Fantastic kit. I think you are probably doing the right thing.

With regards to your first venture into a layout ........ You have come to the right place. There is a goldmine of great advice on here and our members are only too happy to chip in with help if you ask for it.you don't need to take the advice ..... Nobody is offended but it's always helpful to get another take on a particular subject.

Are you starting at ground zero at the moment or have you made a start.

Feel free to post up your track plan to give the others an idea as to what you have in mind. Also a few basics like what era and scale you are working in.

If you have not started on a track plan as yet, you could try downloading a free demonstration version of " Anyrail " which would help you get started. There are others.

You can start your own thread under " members personal layouts ' and start filling in the gaps. You don't need to have started on a physical layout first. It can be used as a sort of designing stage to gather your thoughts etc.

I'll look forward to hearing more about your plans.

    Great start.

    Cheers

    Toto
