Hi everyone, thanks for the warm welcome. My name is Alastair (aka Shortstuff) and I'm a newbie to railway modelling, having never actually built a layout. However, about 12 months ago I decided that it was something that I might like to try my hand at so, since then, I have been collecting various bits and pieces ie, locos, rolling stock, track etc. most of which is 2nd hand. Not having a great deal of space I have opted for a 7ft x 4ft layout as a good size to start with and have chosen Plan 5 from the Peco Setrack planbook, with a few slight modifications.I chose this because it has a variety of modelling elements to it and I didn't feel that it was too ambitious for a first attempt.I have been looking at YouTube for tips on how to do things and came across "Gormo's Shed"and was really impressed by his presentations and ingenuity. It was there that I discovered this forum and thought it would be fun to join, so here I am. I am probably going to ask some stupid questions so you will have to bear with me and I apologise in advance.I hope to post some pics on my progress once I get started.

Hi Alistair. The only stupid question is the one that is never asked. We all start off at the same place and we, as a forum, are only too pleased to help answer any question no matter how often it's been asked. We are discovering new ways to do things all the time so it makes sense that the answers can be updated as well. If you get an answer, but just can't get your head around it, ask it again as sometimes it just needs a little bit of a different approach to help it to sink in.

I'll need to try and get a look at a Peco track plan book. I'll have one somewhere.

Sounds like you have been preparing a bit so it'll be great to see your plans coming together. As you mentioned, Gormo's shed is a great place to start as well as there are some terrific subjects covered there and very easy to follow.

Delighted to have you with us and I look forward to sharing your journey with us. Most of all ...... Take your time and enjoy.

    Cheers

    Toto

Hi Alastair, and welcome again to the forum.

Keeping your first layout small and simple is a great way to go, it gives you the chance to learn most of the skills required to build a layout without committing to a life time project, and more importantly, which parts of the hobby you like most so that your next layout will be more to your liking.

Most of all have fun - after all it's a hobby :avatar:

Welcome to the forum from a snowy East Midlands. Even on a tight budget, you can still have the enjoyment of a model railway. When you have time, have a look at some of the 'How-to's and 'Workbench' projects for help and information on repairing/modifying/detailing cheaply bought loco's and rolling stock, since many of us have a few of the older Triang/Hornby/Lima etc models which can be the basis for great models with perhaps a little adjustment, repair or modification. "Toy and Train" fairs are often a source of cheap 'older' model loco's, together with track, rolling stock and countless other bits and pieces, which will add many possibilities to even a 'budget' layout, any questions, just ask, and someone will be along to help and/or advise, no problem too small!
    Keith.
