I've made this new thread because a conversation between Rob and myself concerning jigs happened on Keith's BR/SR W class Crownline loco build thread the other day and I felt it rude to continue it there. So basically I wondered if this might be of interest to others here as well, I emailed Phil Atkinson at Hobby Holidays regarding availability of their loco chassis frame jigs because the website states these are currently out of stock. Phil says he is now starting a new run of jigs which should be available by the end of April and is currently taking orders, he apologises for non availability which was down to his time being spent at exhibitions but he will be machining new parts for these jigs. I have places an order for one and this represents a considerable saving on the Avonside version, of course I'm not connected with these businesses in any way nor trying to promote their products here. I believe in buying the right type of tools for the right sort of price.

Yes Toto you did... I remember the pic's. Seriously the Emporium currently want £290 for a three axle jig... it's a bit rich for me as I prefer to invest in good kits instead so really it would be a toss up between buying one of Jims 4F kits or going to the Emporium stall at the York show. No prizes here for guessing which one I chose, anyway still on the cards for the future is a Gladiator 8F and for that build I'm not sure a 3 axle jig will be any good.

Am I not correct in saying that further jig's can be added for larger loco types though ?

I'm not entirely sure on that one Toto, I know extra axle guides can be bought from Avonside but how they work in relation to the jig body I couldn't say, I do know that with the Hobby holiday version it wouldn't work building a 4 or 5 axle loco on a 3 axle jig... info from Phil Atkinson which persuaded me to place an order for a 5 axle one. On the plus side some folk on RMWeb (not a place I frequent often) report that the Avonside one has the edge, but for me I just want something that holds frames true when soldering up. I think you have the more versatile jig tho.

I think there is wee thingybobs that can be slid along the jig frame that allow you to add further axles. I could be wrong, i'll need to check. Not that I think I'll need them for what I will get around to building. As you say, they will both do the same job. :tophat:
