I've stopped buying them altogether now. Too many repetitive adverts and they even share the same feature layouts now. I had a call from the Bauer Media who flog them asking why I gave up my subscriptions ....... I don't think they'll bother phoning back. If anything now, it would be the Model Rail Journal.

    cheers

In the last year I have bought one issue of BRM, one of Model Rail and three of the Railway Modeller. I haven't bought any issues of Hornby Magazine, as it's the wrong type of Hornby....

I can't really warm to Model Rail (too slickly produced perhaps) and I'm somewhat ambivalent about BRM. I can however see me buying the occasional Railway Modeller issue, although the number will probably stay around three or four a year, rather than one every month.

I also bought one of Model Rail's annuals about building a model railway but I found it to be rather uninteresting and, frankly, useless, so it went in the bin.

I think we are all the same. The magazines need more features and less adverts and guff. These full page Hattons and rails of Sheffield ads could go in once a quarter as there are rarely any real number of new releases. However, it will cut down on editing costs as large chunks of the magazine will be set up ready to print from the month before. It's just really the few new features that need to be worked in. That's also why if you want to place a large advert ( say half a page ) you need to give them three months notice.

I had thought of placing a big advert for the forum in one of the magazines but then thought again. I suppose it could still happen yet. It just means I'd need to buy a magazine to see it ........ And I'd grudge that. :avatar:

It is interesting that the British scene sustains so many magazines. In the US Model Railroader is a shadow of its former self and seems to have become an almost online video producer. It has been moving that way for at least a decade. On the other hand the on-line and free magazine model railroad hobbyist seems to making steady gains. In this online format there are little ads which you can click on to go to advertisers main site. Very efficient.
Like most of you I have given up on the magazines with the exception of MRJ.

Still buy the occasional one but they get well used.
Once read multiple times they are donated to the local hospital for use on the wards. Mags for women get donated all of the time but the blokes rarely get anything. This way not only is it being read multiple times but it spreads the word about this great hobby of ours.

I`ve got a collection that started in the 80`s, consisting of most of the available UK mags in limited numbers. I only ever buy if one takes my fancy. So in a way I am a collector of sorts as opposed to a subscriber. I have some early Railway Modellers from the 1950`s when Rev. Peter Denny was writing articles and also the illustrious Cyril Freezer.
Each magazine has some little snippet of information that I have locked away for use or future use at some time.
It`s nice to have them stored in my railway room as almost a record of model railway history in a way..???

I never did take out a subscription after starting this thread last year, but I have carried on buying the odd copy of various magazines, and found various old magazine issues with articles I wanted to read on that (in)famous auction site.

I've now joined the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association, so I get their magazine 'Narrow Lines' bimonthly anyway.

When I modelled in 4mm I had a subscription to Model Rail but since moving to 7mm I only get the GOG Gazette. I do tend to buy a few mags as I go away on holiday each year to read in hotels or quiet moments but I have to admit to being disappointed with most of them. - that said I tend to buy more what is available at the time than any specific picking and choosing

I still take Railway Modeller but mostly for the exhibition listings, I don't always read all the articles, just the ones that jump out as interesting to me.
I also take Model Rail, I first started reading it a few years ago and bought it occasionally, but now it is every month though to be fair I don't think it is as good now.

I also subscribe to the UK Model Shop Directory, UKMS news letter on GMail. This also has an excellent exhibition diary.
