That Toto has a lot to answer for, he sent me a link for a loco kit up for sale. A Connoisseur 3F Jinty complete with wheels and motor at a good price, well I held out for "phew" a few minutes, and succumbed, so not for the first time a Jinty is heading North of the border. Will post pics on arrival, but need to finish Nellie before starting on this kit. Paul
Hi Paul, and anyone else with one of these kit's in the stash. There is a first loco build topic by (Mike Boucher) on RMWeb in the Kitbuilding section of a Connoisseur Jinty -http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/18405-bouchs-workbench-7mm-jinty/ although I think he has fallen into the trap that many (including me) do and has over complicated a few things on his first build, there are a lot of things in there worth watching out for. - He had to back track to rectify a few self made issues.
Thanks Rob, I will read the thread carefully especially as it has arrived Couldn't help it I just had to look, and as usual with Jim's kits the nice crisp castings and etches, and the nice touch of a crew as well. Looking forward to starting this build, but must finish Nellie first Paul
Hi Toto Yes it came complete with Jim's motor and Gearbox kit - had to open the box to find out - you trying to torment or inspire me Paul
Hi Paul It's one of the optional extras towards the bottom of the thread - as you say really helpful and easy as a one hit. Paul
Hi York Paul. he does not always have them in stock as a rule but when he does, he is happy to oblige. Only if you buy his kits though. Quite right as the mashima motors will be an issue eventually. cheers toto
Hi Toto, Are Mashima motors not an issue already or does Jim still have stock? To be fair I bought a Stock of Canon 18/30 motors from the US that worked out at £7 once duty had been paid. I plan to use them in all my small tank engines.
This one was supplied with a Mashima, and I have another for my P class 0-6-0T, but will see they can take a flywheel, if not then I will use a Canon motor, and save the Mashima's for loco's where I can fit a flywheel - can't see the point of cutting off the rear shaft, when the Cano0n is sigle ended. Paul
Got you, I do have a couple of Mashima's and thinking about it both of them came with kit's from Jim (I didn't buy them, they were gifts, I have Chris and my son who also happens to be called Chris well trained).
I agree Paul, I plan to do exactly the same. I also have a small stock of cheap chinese Mashima look alikes that I bought off Ebay at about £20 for 5 which will also take a flywheel although the shafts are not quite as long as the ones on the genuine Mashimas
Well I haven't tried them but an Aussie gent was extolling their virtues on the GOG forum about a year or so ago so I decided to have a punt. Apparently he uses them in all his locos. I suppose worst case I could just use them without a flywheel.
Was that Jim Read by chance Rob. He was talking about some on RMWeb off evilbay, cheap as chips so I bought some to try them out. Not used them yet but they look OK to me. Cheer's, Pete.
I've built two of Jim's Jinty kits and they are an absolute pleasure. If there were any negatives, being totally honest, as I can be a bit picky (You've only got to see my Dapol Jinty to see what I mean) I'd say there were three. 1. The smokebox wrapper can be a bit of a trial, but just steady as you go and it will be ok. 2. Replace the cast buffers for proper sprung ones. I used the Markits ones as they can be soldered to the headstocks. 3. Replace the screw couplings for something like the Dapol ones (Good value for money). Other than that they are an absolute dream to build and the straightforward 40:1 gearbox Jim supplies is nice once bedded in. I can't take any pictures of mine because they are hidden away in storage at the moment. Enjoy the build when you get around to it, I have one of his J39's and a 4F to do in my pile!!!!!! David
