The layout 'Tumut' had it's final moments last weekend. Whilst it was a small layout, it was taking up much of my small room that has to have space for my other hobbies. The corner design also didn't turn out how I wanted it to either. So I figured a down-size without compromising operational fun was in order. I have cut down one of the baseboard tables to a desk height and will add an overhead shelf for a 2.4 x 0.6 plank that can be taken to an exhibition, if it goes to plan. The new plan pays a little homage to members layouts on P1MRC, the timesaver and the inglenook. So here we go:
Interesting track plan Reidy. Looks like you have also taken a few ideas from some of the US switching (shunting) planks with the use of the diamond crossing. I'll be watching with interest. Cheers, Gary.
Sure have. Looking at dead frog and electrofrog. Would require a DCC reverser to run the electro. I have all the other track though.' Reidy
I would recommend electrofrog, although as you are aware, Jay Dub Noth Yard uses insulfrog. If using Cobalts, Tortoise or even Peco solenoids, they will change the polarity of the frog for you. Cheers, Gary.
Reidy that plan looks like a lot of fun with shunting possibilities in all directions. Will look forward to seeing the build & good idea re the exhibition potential it give you a end goal to strive for.
Hi all Been beavering away steadily at the new layout. The track plan above continued to change. I stuck with an expanded inglenook that requires a team of shunting locos to work. Please excuse the construction mess in the photos. You can see my new work bench underneath that I’m really excited about. Reidy
Great idea having a layout on top of the bench like that. Saves a lot of space, but more importantly allows the accumulation of stuff somewhere other than on top of the layout. I was lucky with my garage that we have enough room between the 2 cars for a workbench (the woodwork bench), and behind one of the cars we have enough room for another workbench (the modelling bench) and still between it and the back of the car, room for my plank layouts to be built on cut down width saw horses. Benches inevitably get covered in stuff. I'm sure I drove past a town with a similar name to that (auto-correct won't let me re-type it) this week, a very realistic name indeed Cheers Tony
The new layout has a very North American feel to it. I'll be watching from the sidelines very closely ! Nice work so far. Cheers, Gary.
Haha yes Doc, close contest between the winner, Didyabringyagrogalong and Oryagunnadrinkmineagen. Definitely scope to run some American stock. Thinking about scenicing in a generic manner that would look right with American and Aust prototypes. Reidy
I seem to recall a town with a name like Binalongkick but that might have been after a long and heavy session at the footy. Cheers Richard
Hi Gary Yes, still ticking along. It’s operational now for testing. All running smoothly. Great benefits gained from the previous layout. The whole process has been a lot easier with the lessons learnt. Next up, is to build a little of terrain relief in to add interest. I am trying to decide what to build for the main industry at the back of the inglenook. Options are generally silo based, so either concrete or wheat. There’s plenty of nice affordable kits about for NSWGR wheat traffic so I’m leaning towards that. It’s also befitting for the central NSW area that I plan to depict. Cheers for now Reidy
There are some great silo kits available now. Stuart Walker of 'Model train Buildings' fame has a two great silo kits ; https://modeltrainbuildings.com.au/product/ho-scale-8-stack-silo-kit/ https://modeltrainbuildings.com.au/product/temora-flour-mill-grain-silos-ho-scale/ Here is a link to his whole site : https://modeltrainbuildings.com.au/ Cheers, Gary.
