Heljan Deltic plus Leggomanbiffo sound

One of Ralph’s new arrivals has hit the work bench today on a very stormy day here in WA.

First job is to very carefully remove the side panels that hold the chains in place. Using a knife I gently twisted them until they popped out.

Plenty of room in the fuel tanks for a large speaker.

Existing circuit board has to be removed.

The second smaller board is the twin fan control unit, this will be re used.

You need to identify all the connections on the old circuit board, here are the wires for the rear lights.

It’s also a good idea to mark the front of the locomotive drive unit, which is normally the fan end, but on the DELTIC the body is the same so I’ve marked the motor with a no.1.

This is a lot smaller than the XL decoders and comes with either a solder pad or a screw terminal. This is the solder pad version.

As you can see there’s loads of room left, but the solder pad will need securing and protecting from the metal chassis.

So I normally use a piece of plasticard.

Then using some nylon nuts and bolts make up a support plate for the decoder.

Glued into place with the solder plate installed. 4 nuts and nylon washers will keep it safe and secure.

Follow the wiring diagram supplied with the decoder and solder the wires to the solder pads. Don’t forget that with a twin motor unit that the rear motor wires need reversing so that both motor run in the same direction.

I’ve installed two speakers, one in the fuel tanks and one in the body.

That’s it for today, just needs programming and a track test plus I need to paint up a crew .
