    G`day Folks,
I had a visit yesterday from my two lady cousins from my Mother`s side of the family. They are just a few tears older than me and they both like trains.
The purpose of their visit was mainly to show me their Hornby O Gauge clockwork train sets from their childhood.
The first set.....a goods set.....was given to them in 1951 by an in law who worked for NSW railways.

They enjoyed it so much, that within a very short time, another set was given as a gift and this time it was a newer more sophisticated LNER engine and coaches, but still clockwork.

Now to the best of my knowledge, I thought that Hornby ceased production of clockwork O Gauge due to WW II and when they started production again , after the war, I thought it was Hornby Dublo electric and no more clockwork.
I may be misinformed, so possibly somebody can set me straight on that fact, however, whether these trains are 1951 vintage or indeed 1930`s vintage, they are in immaculate condition.
They have been played with for 68 years. Yes the ladies still lay them out on the floor and run them!!!......and they have been looked after and cared for and everything still works and runs well.

They have a stack of track at home. They just brought enough over to my joint to show me as an example
It seems they find great pleasure in trying new and different track plans every now and then.
I would say that the younger of the two is definitely a train tragic......I took her out to see GCJ and we ran some trains and she said to me that she could stay out there all day......well I`ll take that as a compliment..!!!

So gentlemen, when you come across little old ladies like my cousins below.......don`t just assume they are only interested in knitting and cooking and watching Days of Our Lives on TV........these two are a pair of smart cookies who have varied interests and love their model trains.

I recall Hobbyco in George Street, Sydney, down the road from the Trocadero, in the 1960s (I can't remember for sure when it was, but it was probably around 1965) selling off unsold new 0 gauge Hornby tinplate wagons (there was probably more, but I only recall the wagons) at giveaway prices - maybe something like 1/6d or 1/9d each - about half the price of a Matchbox toy car! The ones I distinctly remember were the tipper cars, oil tankers and Saxa salt wagons.
