After seeing Toto's latest build, I really fancied pairing one with my Peckett. I looked to find one in 4mm, but nothing out there. So I thought I would convert an old mineral wagon.
As Toto says in his thread none of them were identical, so I thought no rivet counters can have a go at me.
    First the victim.

Next job to cut the body to shape and form the cut out. I razor sawed the vertical cuts and then nibbled the horizontals with pincers Cutouts (1).JPG
    Cutouts (5).JPG
The thickness of the wagon sides are well over scale, so I'm going to shape them to try and disguise them.

You are not hanging about. Plasticard will do the internal dividing sections for you if you have any.

It's looking the part already ..... good job so far. Keep it up.

I had a few pieces of strip wood so thought I would use that.

In the centre of the long sides there is some ironwork, so uprights would have been bolted to it. It's left the partition slightly off centre , but it just seemed more logical.

Now I would have sacrificed the GW wagon behind it but that's purely a sectarian type of thing :avatar:

    Nice build Jim

Looking really good. The shades coming through on the weathering are particularly good.

Next the tool boxes. I decided to stray from the "O" version and make the tool boxes with sloping lids.
Bases from shaped Balsa, and lids from card.

    Forgot to ask Jim,

What's the plan for the exterior? I'd be tempted to keep the original branding and weather over the top of it to leave partially visible. Chances are that when these wagons were being converted, some may not have been totally repainted as aesthetics would have been an unnecessary expense. Especially if it was any kind of private industry owner as opposed to one of the big operators.

    Looking forward to seeing more.

    Great minds think alike.

I've just logged on after spending a couple of hours splashing all colours of thin washes over it. Photos later.

A cracking job mate :tophat::tophat:. Regarding the thickness of the sides, you could file and/or scrape a slope from the top down but to be fair, it looks great as is! Remember the planking would be around 3 inches thick.

    Cheers, Pete.

Next up a bit of work on the chassis.
As this is a really old model it's got a metal D ring and rivetted on coupling hook. Cut off hook and buffers, filed flat and made 4 X dumb buffers out of balsa. Multiple coats of stain on buffers and washes all over.

So here we are. I read the info on Connoisseur's website and realised that I needed footboards. Very impressed with Jim's site, especially the extra info he gives you.
As mentioned earlier, loads of washes added which look great in the flesh but a bit bright in the photos. Also extra details.

Finally, with Peckett (much too clean but can't bring myself to weather yet) and Sentinel which it is running on my layout with.

A terrific result. I'm sure folks will be tempted to have a go at copying this. With the sheer amount of individual wagon liveries and designs it would be easy to maintain an element of individuality as well.

    Really excellent.

I can see a wagon build competition coming on in the near future. If my memory serves me correctly we had a similar conversion competition before.

    Great work

    Cheers

Hi Jim, If you have a fibreglass pen you could give the lettering a rub over to distress them a little.
I did this on my ex GWR wagon before weathering it.

You can just see the W showing through the latter photo.

Hi Pete, as Toto said, a private owner wouldn't have bothered repainting. But I may try your method on my next project. (When I decide what it is)
