    Hi

    Welcome to the forum

Depending on the type of coach and period you wish to model, the MK2 stock was produced between 1964 & 1975. Some early Mk2's had the maroon livery, but the majority had the blue / grey livery, so you could easily mix maroon mk1's, blue grey mk 1 & 2s.

    Hi

    Thanks for replying

It was actually the Bachmann livery application and shades I was after so that I can source the correct shade for both mk1 and mk2A that they have released as a model. The problem with Bachmann is that they released mk2A in different shades of blue and the wrong application of detail with the line running through the door stops instead of under them. They then rerelease the mk2A in 2012 and are about to release them all again

    Thanks

Ah - sorry, not sure, as the only blue coach I had was a Lima BG and that just got a repaint into Maroon.

Apart from the incorrect lining application, a light coat of weathering can be a great leveller, to help any inconsistencies in colour, that and older coaches will show signs of fading.

The real railways cars weren't all painted at the same time or even in the same workshop so often display variances in the shades of colour plus the length of service since overhaul is a big factor in how much weathering or even fading that may take place.
So Paul's advice on weathering is probably the best option if you find a big variance in your models

I have a couple of BR mk2s that are the same model purchased at the same time, but have slightly different shade of colour so you may be up for a challenge to find a full set all exactly the same.

Dear messrs Slenderslug6, Paul I, SMT Chris and others,

Many years ago at a Melbourne BRMA Convention our dinner guest speaker worked in the BR SR Clapham Carriage Sidings in the 1950s and he said that SR car sets were turned to even out the colour fade. He also said that cars that went for overhaul were not always repainted but at least some were deep cleaned and then rebar isles, whilst others were repainted.

Apparently the Southern Malachite was prone to rapid fading which is why BR SR Coach Green was a darker shade. It should also be remembered that paint from that era and before was less hard wearing and required more coats than modern paints.

When carriages returned from the works it was noticeable how dark a carriage was compared to those in traffic, hence the need to frequently turn in service carriages to even out the fading.

So a difference in shade is not uncommon and a light weathering will moderate the effect of different shades.

    Best wishes and regards, Echidna

I seem to remember reading that the LNER had to do the same for the East Coast stock for the same reason to avoid fading.
