This is a placeholder for an unusual build for me. A couple of weeks ago while demonstrating at Kirkby Stephen, a gent enquired if I built 4mm scale whitemetal locos. I said that I would consider it and he took contact details. During last week we exchanged emails and I quoted for a couple of DJH Highland Railway locos. To be honest I wasn't at all confident that I would get the job(s) so I was pleasantly surprised to get an email back saying that he would like to go ahead.

The builds are to be straight from the box but they need to go around 4mm first radius curves even if that means removing the flange from the centre wheels.

It turns out that the gent doesn't live too far from our northern residence so he's going to arrange to drop them off next weekend (I think).

The second loco is also from DJH and is a Highland Railway Jones Goods. Hopefully Richard (@Ben Alder alder) will pop in and keep me on the straight and narrow when I get started.

Both locos are to be finished in LMS black but i won't be painting them.

I have an unfinished DJH Barney, that I started to convert to P4, I placed the motor in the tender, with a carden shaft to an exactoscale gearbox on the rear wheel, the only problem was stopping the tender from trying to flip over. You never know it may get another outing :whatever:

Watching and waiting! The Barney is a doddle and the Big Goods body is also a treat to work with. I ground to a halt with the chassis as supplied, and have a Lochgorm etch waiting to do but recently picked up a made up version from ebay that runs well, so might clean it up and save me a build...

Thanks for the head's up Richard,

Can you give me an idea what made you struggle with the big goods chassis? - Is it one of the original two boiler plates with holes drilled in them?

I built the LNER Q7 many moons ago and had to resort to a garden weed wand to solder the frames together because my soldering iron at the time wouldn't touch it. I seem to recall loads of sideplay which should make getting it around the first radius curves easier, if my recollection is correct of course:confused:

Yes, that was what was supplied - I've had the kit for a lonnngg time - and others kept leapfrogging it in the queue. TBH, I've far more engines than I need and really should stop but I daresay it'll hit the tracks one day.

I hear you on that one Richard, but they are so enjoyable to build, or that's what I keep telling myself.

While delivering paintings to Locomotion on Saturday I collected the kit's for Barney and the Jones Goods. Upon opening the boxes I was startled at how small everything is. I was also quite surprised to find that apart from the chassis (etched on the Barney and two slabs of drilled brass for the Jones goods) and the tender coal rails everything else is pewter.

Even more scary is that one of them has plastic handrail knobs.....

These are very old kit's because they have DJH at Leadgate Industrial Estate whereas they have been at Villa Real for quite some time now.

I will do the obligatory photos tomorrow.

I have decided to combine the thread for both builds as I suspect that I will build at least some of each simultaneously.

As promised what's in the box photos

    First the Jones Goods.

Just look at those chassis plates - Tirpitz Hull plates spring to mind...

Two part boiler on this one.

I have no idea what the parts in the Cavendish packet are for

Loads of loverly white metal. Now ...... this would be an excellent kit for a blow by blow explaining the white metal techniques. :avatar: I have a couple of white metal kits in the stash to melt at some point.

I am sure that I can oblige with that, although you may be frightened off if I start on it with the microflame:avatar:

True, at least it won't weigh as much as the 7mm streamlined Coronations do my wrists and hands ache each time I work on them.

Having promised that I would endeavour to have these finished by the end of the year I made a start on the tender for the Barney a couple of weeks ago but then life/work intervened and I haven't done any modelling since then. I came back to it about an hour ago and decided I wasn't happy with what I had done so into a bowl of boiling water it went and in moments it was back into it's constituent parts - the joy of using 70 degree solder on whitemetal.

Before lunch I reassembled one side with the front/rear plus the coal plate and I am much happier with the fit of things so I will crack on. I broke off to see if 7mm scale coach/wagon bearings would fit the Markits Tender wheels, because the kit as designed would have the tender wheels running loosely in the whitemetal axle boxes. - Not something I am keen on in principle but time will tell if I can do anything about it.

Photos to follow later in the day.

Here's where I got to before knocking off for food.

The supplied cast whitemetal brake standard snapped in half as soon as I gave a stern look at it and I was planning to make another from tube and a handrail knob but when I went into the storage trays where I keep sundries such as handrail knobs I found a left over 4mm scale brake standard so I used that instead.

Although the castings are quite clean, the rear of the tender is in three parts and getting them to look reasonable has been quite a chore it really ought to have a bit more filling before painting but that will be down to the owner.

I had forgotten just how small 4mm stuff is when compared to what I usually work on.

I seemed to get into my stride with this and great progress was made yesterday.

By Dinner time last night the tender was complete all but for the buffers and front handrails.

The buffers created a bit of a question. There were some rather nice turned buffers supplied but I couldn't make them sprung without the tails being visible behind the buffer plank because the frames intersect the hole. My eyes are not good enough to make self contained buffers in 4mm so a compromise was agreed with my client. I cut the tails of the tuned buffers and soldered them solid. The other options being to fit the DJH cast buffers or have the tails/nuts visible in the frames when viewed from the side.

The vac pipe was scratched up from rod fine brass wires and thin walled tube.

After dinner I finished the tender.

Making the buffers none sprung was a nice looking compromise.

From there I made a start on the chassis.

Those are chunky looking frames Rob. The coupling rods look positively starved. Are they yet to be layered up?

The tender is a cracking bit of workmanship, well done mate.

    Hi Pete,

They are - 0.9mm and sadly that's it for the coupling rods. It's a straight from the box build so I won't be doing anything further with the coupling rods. I will probably have to scratch some clack valves though and I may suggest replacing the whitemetal whistle offering. Not only does it look poor but it will be very vulnerable to being snapped of because it's really tiny.
