Giving one of these some shed space. Looks like ACE are going to be put to the test as another joins the stable. Or ..... will it be me that's put to the test. Probably the later but again, they come in at very respectable prices.

I am pretty sure that this is the ex Right Price kit and if you have a look on Sandy's Workbench on RM Web, Sandy harper built one quite recently. It wasn't without out issues but it turned out looking like an A3 in the end.

I'm sure it'll be like many of the kits that I've bought Rob. It'll take me 10 times longer than anyone else to build and there will be the endless list of posts going up trying to bail me out the thick brown stuff. :avatar: good entertainment if nothing else. One thing I've become a little more happy with is the tender builds. Most of them followcquite a common design. Not all of course but the parts require similar so I'd imagine that once You've done a couple, you'll have covered most bases.

In the main you are right I think but the tricky thing with a lot of tenders is the flares and on some, the bending of the tanks (the J6 being an example of the latter). Although the LMS Stanier tenders don't have flares that are to be joined at right angles they do need bending in the right place to get them to fit the inner bulkheads and of course they all have coal spaces which can be a bit of a pig to fit on occasions.

When I made the BR2 tender for the Standard 4 4-6-0 the tank curvature was followed by an immediate outward fold to form the coal bunker, to make things a little more difficult there is an inward roll at the base of the tender tank too as on all BR tender designs. The saving grace is that the rear builkhead etch can be used as a guide to create the correct profile, I would imagine that on your Acme DOG kit there will be a series of parallel half etch lines on the inside denoting where the roll and curve takes place. this will aid you in the bending process but it is case of gently gently until it fits and definitely a folding tool to form the straight angle edges. It just becomes a matter if whether you emboss the side rivet detail first before bending to avoid distortion to the etch or afterwards and potentially risk "flattening" rivet detail.

:scratchchin: all good moot points to think about but at least they are being highlighted. They could be superslow builds. :avatar::avatar: but I will start them and ask as I go ...... eventually. Some easier builds first.

and the photo's ....... and out of the box ......

boiler etches, firebox, cast parts and brass rods ......

    and more brass etches .....

    and some more ....

then on to the chassis parts ......

and the same complaint ...... packaging ....... damaged frets .....

some smaller parts look completely buckled and some have become detatched

the last two photo's in the centre of the images show some very delicate parts. Some have become detached and I'll need to look through the destructions to determine if they have detached as designed to or if they are actually broken. A shame really.

anyway, same story, you get what you pay for and whilst I do think they will make up into a good enough model of the intended loco, there is a noticeable difference to other more expensive alternatives. It really is a case of budget. they provide a cost efficient option.

the proof will be in the building. :avatar:

That's pretty dire Toto, did these etches arrive in that condition or was the damage incurred when taken out of the packaging?

Nah ..... thats how they arrived. I'll check and see if I need replacements or not. I'm sure William will be more than accomodating if I do as he has been top notch via his various emails updating me with delivery progress and posting on some fine images of the finished kits. A nice guy to deal with so far forgetting the initial delivery delay.

    cheers
