Might be better off casting and scratching out a single wall then take a mould off that using silicon. Make new castings from the silicon mould. Or go down the Allan Downes route and carve Das Clay... Have you attempted printing off the block work on your 3D printer...?? Cheers, Gary.
Hi Gary - welcome back after your enforced isolation, think I'll sign up with your ISP, that way I might get a few days off . I'm having fun playing with the rollers, and getting reasonable results, just need to play a bit more to get consistent results. Just in case you missed the Green Stuff World Rollers thread you may find these of interest. This set I've wrapped cling film around a piece of ply, used the plain roller with the 3mm thickness spacers to flatten out, then used the brick roller to put the random ashlar effect. Left them approx 5 min then slid the cling film and clay off the ply and laid it on to expanded polystyrene foam to dry off. We'll see the results tomorrow. Paul
Yes, come join us. Optus = Cactus.... If you recall, I had problems with the air dry clay I used on Industry Lane cracking up after it had dried. Pain in the behind that was, but being covered over with scenic material made a difference. This is something you cannot do. On the other hand, have you considered rolling out some plaster of paris, with some PVA mixed in and when pliable (not too wet) rolling your roller over it ?? Cheers, Gary.
There is a young lady on F/B called Nikki Wilkes who is using a product called foamex (not to be confused with foamboard-different product) for scribing brick and stonework. Foamex seems to be a denser expanded foam that takes embossing really well. I wonder if your rollers might work on that without using clay? Cheer's, Pete.
I looked up Foamex - found these on fleabay 10 x A3 3mm thick sheets approx £15.50 inc p&p, maybe worth a punt, we'll see if there are any sheckles left after the boiler repair and the visit to York. Paul
Finally got to do a bit on the layout. 1st coat of black on the bridge structure, then a wee bit of testing Picked up a couple of test pots from Homebase (now owned by the boys from downunder). Matt Stone and Slate Grey Left for approx 15min, then given a wash of black (two drops of mixed acrylic black mixed with a lot of dirty water giving a very dark grey ) Until the wash I favored the Slate Grey, after the wash the Mat Stone comes out as the favored option - what do you think ? Paul
The grey too has the edge for me Paul ... the Stone would look good if you gave it a couple more light wash overs to tone down the look of newness. But that is just my opinion.
Grey it is then, a slight compromise, I have applied a Matt Stone base coat, let it dry and now the first I'll let it dry then apply a wash of black Paul
Black wash applied - as Ive not sealed the emulsion, it does trend to blend a little with the base coat. Then dry brushed with the Slate Grey Base coat colour Then dry brushed (in a downwards direction) with the Matt Stone And loosely placed in position Paul
Started on the retaining / support wall for the other side of the girder bridge - this is where it will go Clay rolled out and the Bricks roller used, then a section cut out to clear the wooden frames. Plus a few capping stones. Paul
How long is it taking for the clay to dry out. I'm assuming the capping stones will be fixed in place before the clay dries. A coat of PVA between the capping stones and the fixing point. I'm thinking of either DAS clay or some Townstreet wall casts for around the signal box on Luib Bridge. The DAS would be more adaptable. I'll wait and see what form the landscape takes first. Your rollers may just come in handy. ...... Best pal.
Superb Paul, I too prefer the grey based washes. to my mind much more in keeping with a grimy/sooty railway environment
Thanks Guys Now the boilers working again drying time (i.e. brittle and easy to break) is approx 12 hours As I'm needing some panels approx 1ft long, keeping them in one piece is becoming a challenge, so I'm going to get some of this https://www.wickes.co.uk/Knauf-Aquapanel-Jointing-Tape---100mm-x-20m/p/224584 I reckon, laying this down on the work board, then rolling the clay into it leaving spare at either end, apply the texture. Wait a few hours and free the cast off the board, and lay it back on the board - believe it or not this seems to help keep the piece flat. Just need to get to Wikes Paul
