An O scale plank comes with Oscale locomotive model from an antique and collectables Auction.
The how and why, whilst having a bit of down time on Thursday afternoon googling on the ipad I followed a link to a Antique and auction house that had some scale trains listed mostly HO and OO but a couple of lots listed as "O" and "On30" caught my attention.
And after having a look I decide why not put in a on line bid didn't cost anything to register for biding and my wife Shelley had planned a trip to a expo in western Sydney Saturday so would be going past the place on the way home, so I placed a couple of bids on the On30 items and the Oscale loco that came with a few other bits and a large job lot of On30 items.
Whilst waiting for Shelley as she called in at IKEA on the way home I watched the live Auction via mobile phone as the price's for train items skyrocketed past retail prices for most items.
All the On30 locos and rail cars where past my bids easily.
There was a short break, then the last On30 lot a job lot of 25 items came up only one other bid was placed on line and I won the lot of 25 trucks and a loco as well I discovered within in the lot, plus a scenic diorama.
Next up was the Lot with the O scale loco no other bids so I won it for the starting call.
    So what did I get
1- a little Oscale brass 0-4-0 dock tank that has had some Ozzy additions of an air pump, light + fittings
2- 2 NSWGR LCH coal hoppers.
3- a single US atlas Ore hopper
4- 2 Framed Prints one of a Sydney Tram with the Ozzy Harbour bridge in the back ground it's going on the wall, the other print is a big one what looks to be a Japanese triple header it's big if any one wants it it's free to a new home you just pick up I'll post a photo tomorrow.
    5- A "O" scale plank 2.4 m long in one piece.

It's this plank that will feature in this Topic
It's very Australian scenery quite well done but just needs some modern touches of static grass and some repairs to the buildings and some paint to spruce it up cut the board it two right in the middle across a point
The track plan is very basic one siding off a line that runs from one end to,the other but doesn't have holes for the trains to go through the
Any way a photo to start. Of the plank with the little 0-4-0:avatar::avatar:

At the other end of the Plank form the siding is a typical Australian weatherboard and fibro country style house needs a few repairs but it has good foundations as they say.

Result! wow well done Chris, that is a cracking little plank, cutting it in two is a good idea if you should decide to exhibit it, deffo needs a fiddle yard, just a couple of roads would be ample I reckon, its definitely got character, and after your tweaks will be even better .

    Cheers, Pete.

Thanks Pete made for an interesting day out went out with out a tran layout returned home with a train layout all 2.4m/8foot of it.
Luckily it fitted in the car in one piece or I may have been visiting the local hard ware store to cut in two on site.

Yes the 1/2 way cut is a must, easy to do just cut the point in two as it is across the joint in the two piece's of plywood that have been used as the layout top. The centre cross brace will need moving 1/4 of a inch to form one board end and fit another beside it for the second board end then cut the two long side rails and it should be two boards,
I will pre set up the two centre cross braces before installing with a pair of locating dowel's and bolts with wing nuts as a means of securing tightly.

Yes a fidle yard of some sort will be needed plus some legs as I'm guessing it has previoulsy been on a shelf not free standing

Some lighting for the 3 buildings for that little extra spark
And some wiring as currently only has 2 wires connected to 2 screws on the front to supply power via alligator clips

Plus when modifying the point (cutting it in two) it will be made DCC Friendly for reliable operation.

Now whats the thought on fiddle yard or yards, 1 or 2 with a yard each end, only very small 2 track slide type.
I'm thinking one small two track at one end and a short add on at the other end just big enough for a Rail Motor to disappear into
The fiddle yard will only need to be long enough for say small loco 1 wagon and a guards van with basic operation of swapping the wagon in the siding for the one on the train then returning to the fiddle yard not really exciting but better than nothing.

Not much to do, then once finished its will be offered up for sale as I don't really have enough room at the moment for it.

The mid point literally cut here.:giggle: that line seen in the scenic's is the joint to be:thumbup:

    Hi Gary it is
    Called Bargain Hunt. At Thornleigh,
It was one of those chance finds

I asked the lady on reception at the place how often trains came up she said usually once or twice a year usually estate sales.
It seamed to be a crowd of regular's in there when I arrived to pick up the goodies the Auction was still going with furniture etc seemed most bidders where on first term name basis with the Auctioneer when he was knocking items down, and they where thrilled at a new face asking if I would be coming to other auctions for items other than trains "Sorry No" If there was ever any other trains I would do it on line again I couldn't sit round all day waiting for a lot to come up.

But I can say that of most of the trains there were only a "few" bargains the On30 bulk lot and Shed diorama lot being one, only one other bidder. I got for $90, 24 wagons and a loco. Bit over $3 a item guessing as not main stream HO/OO not as much interest.

Other Examples I saw go through.
A mid 2000 era Hornby Scotsman train set went for $412 current new price for a current one at Hvmrs is $259
A Hornby Calidonia train set went for $180
Some old Athearn X blue box locos where going in lots of 2 for over $170, Lima 44's 180. Someone got 12 Lima TAM cars for $412 so $34 each not bad as they are regularly on eBay for $60/80
    Their where about 70 lots
Bachmann On30 locos mostly just under retail for ones that were poorly weathered or had been modified.
There was a lot with HornbyOO three rail 3 locos some track carriages and an original throttle was a good buy in the 200's

Photo below of the prints that came with the lots I like the Sydney Tram one so will put it up on the wall.
If any one wants the Big one with the Tripple header it's free to a new home probably looks better in the photo than in person.:avatar:

It would be possible I guess Ian

    Some thing like this
would have to realign the siding as its a little off the standard peco point alingment may be worth thinking about.:scratchchin:

Already started cutting it up :avatar: well at 8 foot it was an unruly beast now it's 2x4foot boards and yes I cut the point right in the middle.

I Installed 2 locating dowels was to be Three but one has done a disappearing act off the bench when it turns up I'll install it plus two holes for the securing bolts with wing nuts. Thanks to the drill press a nice easy job to drill the 5 holes nice and straight with the end bits clamped together.

Here it is in two bits

Yes needed to get a start as don't have room for 8foot of extra layout and will also make it easier to work on each section at 4 foot long much more user friendly  esp turning upside down to fit wiring DCC bus lighting wiring and a point motor.

Luckily there is already a hole in the board under the point for installing a point motor currently has a wire poking out the side of the board to operate its a bit hit and miss.
