Postman arrived today with a Brassworks J94 from Bachmann in unfinished condition. I have never painted a brass locomotive from scratch so here is my attempt. First the model. Very impressed with the build, no loose parts, other than the coupling chains and one very small fixing screw onto the body, which is an easy fix. This is the low bunker version which differs from Totos high bunker version he purchased last Feb.

it does amaze me at the quality of the soldering that has been done to these models.

Removing the body to check every thing is ok, I've test run it and it runs superbly. There's also loads of room in the boiler for the eventual DCC conversion with large high base speaker and a large stay alive.

Access hole into the boiler area.

So after running her for 30 mins or so on DC power I have stripped her down ready for painting. Fairly straight forward other than having to un-solder the power wires from the plunger pickups to allow them to be removed.

All the body items were then washed in hot water with a mild detergent and an old tooth brush, rinsed and left to dry in the sun.
The weather over here is hot and getting hotter so the etching primer was dry in seconds.

After 2 hours I masked up the buffer beams and sprayed them white, ready for the red paint later on.

Chassis has had its first spray of flat black and is now drying off. I think im going to weather this before re assemble which will only leave the wheels and rods to weather and blend in with the airbrush, which should make clean up of the wheels  /pickups minimal....I hope?

A very nice looking model. Good to see it broken down. Not to difficult be the looks of it.

Looking forward to seeing the paint job and the weathering.

    Cheers

They are a nice little loco Kim and that boiler /tank has heaps of room for decoder and a large speaker.
I drilled out the Chimney to let the sound out in the right place
It's been a while since I fitted it but I think I got a Jaycar 3030 speaker with the edges trimmed right back to the edge to make it round right to the edge of the cone and the back sealed
Shoe horned it in by slightly opening up one part of the motor hole. I had a spare TCS decoder at the time with a KA and without power it runs for about 10 seconds.

Cheers Ron....is that not why the British invented airing cupboards? :avatar::

Cheers Toto, correct and unfortunately for you, no hammer required, standard or mains!
Yes looking forward to weathering this one, lots of nice detailing to reveal.

Thanks Ian, will do my best to keep you entertained.

Hi Chris, mine will have a Zimo decoder and speaker set up. I've already done as you have and drilled out the chimney.
Have you added an extra weight to your?

    Kim

That is a beautiful loco and I'm impressed with the speed at which you've started painting it.
I'm just disappointed that I didn't get to see it on Thursday.
I knew I should have stayed the night.

Today's efforts...first a blow over with a mix of leather and gunmetal.....

Next pick out the detailing with a brass colour mixed with the remains of the above, just to vary the effect

Once dry which in today heat did not take long, re assemble the chassis. Note for Toto or any one else attempting this. The horn blocks are a pig to reassemble if you leave all the coupling rods on, with is how I removed them, so re move the rods and re fit each wheel set. Second point, don't forget to give the openings for the horn blocks a quick clean up to remove the paint you have just applied, as even with a light coating from the air-gun, its still enough to make them stick, they need to be free moving. :twitch:.
Once assembled the plunger pickups just jump out at you...will have to dab some oily black paint on these to camouflage them.

Ill sort the plungers out when I do the wheels and rods. The picture might not show up the weathering very well but its there and next to the black body work looks a whole lot better.

The white under coat areas ready for some red paint.

First coat of red applied, not to worried about a top class finish to the red as the weathering will cover up most of the buffer beams.
You might just be able to see that I've painted the cab interior with its first coat of off white / straw yellow, plus the pipes and leavers have had a spot of colour added

So that's it for tonight, as the red need to dry and there's a beach and a sunset fishing trip which just has to be done tonight after a hot one.

    Re - hornblocks

As there will be manufacturing tolerances, before dis-assembling mark up the face that was on the bottom (marker pen will do). This allows you to return the hornblock to the correct orientation that the chassis was assembled on.

    Hope you enjoyed the fishing

Hi Kim no extra weight surprisingly even as light as it is, will pull more than what would be a scale load.
