A new competition will be announced in July's edition of the Newsletter. Further details will also be released within this post in due time.

As you'll see from the title, it's all about how to's. The rest of the details you'll need to wait to find out.

This competition is sponsored by platform1 itself.

There are two prizes up for grabs and they will go to one overall winner. The prizes are, a Weller 40 watt 240 volt soldering iron and a FMR maxi static grass applicator.

Everyone can enter apart from the two judges ( sorry Gary and Gormo ) you will understand why you guys have been chosen when the details are released.

    Stay tuned for the detail.

Good luck to all who enter.

    Cheers

    Toto

    Hi Toto.

Can previous posts be used or must they be new tutorials?

As part of the criteria, I will be setting a number of pre selected subject areas. If your previous ly created post falls within the subject matter, it can be entered.

I'll get the final details of the competition up soon and all will become clearer.

    Cheers

    Ok,

The " how to " competition.

Here is what you need to do.

Pick from the following list of choices and submit a video showing " how to " do it.

    The choices are as follows.

Planting a building / structure onto a layout. How to do it disguising the obvious transition join between building and baseboard.

How to create a neutral back scene. A back scene that could possibly be changed between layouts.

How to replicate an old compacted ballasting effect.

How to hard wire a loco decoder

How to add relief to building Windows and doors.

How to incorporate everyday household waste into creating an item for your layout

    So,

A good mix of subjects from what you can select one only. Most of these if not all will have been done before but as well as the end result, the skill and judging will be in the presentation and clarity of the video submission. I dare say the judges ( Gormo and Gary ) will have their own judging criteria as well.

I was going to add " how to " convince SWMBO that I need another loco but for elf and safety reasons, I left that one out.

One submission per member, must be a video, not camera stills. The closing date is the end of September. I have allowed 2 months to cater for the fact that the little people competition is still running until the end of August.

Previously created videos can be submitted but that may be taken into consideration as part of the final judging decision. Maybe not.

I will leave the rest of the judging criteria to Gormo and Gary. Their decision is final. The winner walks away with a 40 watt 240 volt Weller soldering iron and an FMR maxi static grass applicator courtesy of Platform1.

    Any questions .......... Fire away.

Good luck to everyone who enters ............ You've got to be in it to win it.

    Cheers

    Toto

Although I've done a few still photo "How-To's", I don't have much of a video capability or a 'U-Tube' account, (which I gather is the way to link a video to the forum), and I already have a 'Weller' cloned 40 watt solder gun and a static grass applicator, so I won't enter this competition, but I look forward to seeing contributions from those who do, hopefully from some of the more recently joined members.

I do think that a series of photos should be allowed as not every one has a video camera.

It had been at the back of my mind. I suppose it may disclude a lot of folk so ok I'll allow a series of photo's.

I'm not judging this so Gary and Gormo will need to spell out the exact criteria as far as what would be required for a photographic entry.

Any comments Gary / Gormo feel free to fire away.

    Cheers

    Toto

The main criteria for me, regardless of whether it is video or slide show, is how well the tutorial explains the subject. [size=
][size=I am looking for a tutorial that is comprehensive yet economic and clear in it's delivery of the information. ][size=
][size=For my part, a tutorial that is clear and to the point, would be received more favorably, than one where the presenter feels they have to waffle on with excess subsidiary information that is not really relevant to the final outcome. ][size=
][size=Glossy, glitzy productions will not compensate for lack of relevant content.][size=
][size=Content clearly explained is the most important thing to me. ][size=

    Criteria...

    1. I would like to see a video slide show or a straight out video (movie ?).

    2. I'd like to see your entry entered as a single post, not multiple posts within a thread. This makes for easy judging.

    3. I agree with all of Gormo's comments (above) regarding the quality of your production and getting to the point, by being informative and clear, without the waffle !

So, you do not have a video camera, fair enough. But do you have a mobile/cell phone...??
It's amazing what your mobile phone can do these days ! Most of my own photography and video is done using my mobile phone, as I believe the camera is far superior to my old box brownie ! ;)

    Don't have a movie making program ??

I have added both these links below, which will allow you (the entrant) to make a rolling slide slow or complete video, where you can add comments, photo transitions, music (royalty free) etc ! We can't have you post videos with licensed music !

    Mac : https://moviemaker-for-mac-os-x.en.softonic.com/mac/download

Windows : http://www.windows-movie-maker.org/ (two versions here, one for Windows 7, 8, 10 and one for Windows XP, Vista)

Here is a link to Royalty Free Music, as used by Gormo and myself : http://www.bensound.com/

Now, for anyone who is unsure of using the Movie Maker programs above, you can check out Gormo's excellent tutorials :
