I'd quite fancied one of these loco's for a while, but other things took priority, at least until Kernow decided to discount what is presumably their leftover stocks from the RRP of £125 down to £99 (UK prices), so I decided to take the plunge. Although the loco was offered in various liveries, the only one now available at this price is the BR black with 'Early' logo, but that's a simple exercise for me to remove the 'Early' and replace with 'Late' logo's, main thing is the loco itself, which is very nicely made and well thought out in typical DJM fashion. A session on my rolling road to run the loco in showed it was very smooth out of the box in both directions, so after half an hour each way, it was time to fit the DCC decoder. I have to say that this was the easiest and fastest decoder fitting imaginable, less than a minute from start to finish! Remove smokebox door (held on by 2 tiny magnets), pull out harness with tweezers and remove DC board from the socket, plug in 6 pin DCC decoder (my 'Standard fit' LaisDCC), push harness/decoder back into the smokebox, refit smokebox door........Job done, and no body removal required! Why can't all manufacturers think like this??? Apart from that, fitting a loco crew is just as easy, remove the 'coal load' from the tiny bunker (this just pops off using a slim knife blade or similar), and underneath are two tiny screws, one each side, remove these, and off comes the loco roof/cab rear, enabling easy crew fitting. On top of this 'brilliance', there is a pair of wires (red/black) already in the bunker, for 'Sugar cube' speaker fitting should you wish to fit a sound decoder.......how much easier can it get!!!???
After programming, DCC running was equally smooth and quiet, and in my own case, fitting 'Kadee's' (small tension locks are provided) No17 at the rear, No18 at the front just a 'plug-in' NEM job. Also included are the usual 'vac pipes, 8 "Southern' headcode discs and a full set of fire irons, well packed in an attractive foam lined box. It's easy to see why Dave Jones (Mr D J Models) is beginning to make a name for himself amongst the 'Big Boys' of the modelling world with well though out models, I'm expecting delivery any day now of the Dapol B4 loco, time will tell if it's anywhere near as good as the DJ models I have so far.
