    G`day Trainspotters,

Can anyone tell me what this is...????......and don`t tell me it`s a little man laying down in the bushes......Sheeeshhh!!!!!

    Here`s a close up

My sister gave this to me. She bought a decorative bowl like a fish bowl. It had river pebbles and this stuff in it.......no water.....no fish......just the pebbles and this stuff.

She decided she didn`t like it.......I decided I liked this stuff.....so there you are but I`m none the wiser and I would like to get hold of some more of it for scenery purposes. I think it would be great for doing bushes and undergrowth etc.

So I wait in eager anticipation for the copious amounts of replies that will come flooding in from you nice knowledgeable people.

I put Artificial Greenery Garland into Bing and got some promising looking results - small part of one of these?

Hi Gormo the second I saw it I was reminded of the fish tank section at 'Pets at Home' ... probably the UK equivalent of 'Stingy Bitey Nippy things Outback' in Australia.. good luck

Looks like the sort of artificial moss you put on pot plants, used for flower arranging etc.

Try searching on spanish moss or reindeer moss.

I'd say it is dried up lichen or moss. I have some in my own scenics box of tricks. I use it sparingly as a fern like ground cover amongst other scenery materials.

    Thanks guys,

    Got it !!!!!!

Ed nailed it with artificial moss.........now there are different types and some of them quite expensive but I found this one.....an Australian company....in NSW and the price is very good and it`s nearly the same as the stuff I have....definitely worth a try I think.

Many thanks to all for your suggestions........many hands make light work.

This isn't artificial, the colour yes, the actual material is not ! ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

Yes and no ! Being natural, it will eventually dry out and perish. I have noticed that the moss I have is very dry and crumbles in my hand, basically to a fine dust. Best coating the moss with a matt medium to extend it's life. ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

I'm a bit late but I agree that it's moss, I've got a bag of assorted moss I use on NE occasionally. Useful stuff.

    Okey Dokey,

Keefe comes up trumps as well........that sphagnum sure looks like what I`ve got.

Gary`s info though makes me wonder how long it`s going to last........it sure looks good but if it crumbles into dust after a while..????

I`ll give it a go and spray it and if it looks rubbish after a while I`ll replace it.!!!!

Not sure but I think its the same as some moss I've used on my photo plank.

The bottom right of the photo, but in its raw state. I have a carrier bag full of the stuff, I ought to have a look and check its still ok.

    Pete.
