G`day Folks, Welcome to Episode 11 of Gormo`s Shed. First of all thank you to all who ensured that Gormo`s Shed carried on every week during my absence....much appreciated.. This episode deals with a method I developed over a couple of years for manual control of points. The critical element for me was the use of the hinge to activate the point. It was not my own idea, rather it was shown to me by a gentleman called Graham Inglis from Victoria Australia. It was one of those Eureka moments for me because it was so obvious that the hinge was the perfect solution once I`d seen Graham`s version of it. I have used photos and videos from my archive and chopped and sorted them for this presentation. The picture quality on some of the vids is not the best but you`ll get the idea I think.?? I could have added more detail regarding the making of some of the parts however the video seems to be long enough as it is. If anyone needs any more detail just give me a call. Hi Brian Welcome back, I've got the popcorn out, and going to sit back and enjoy this, it's certainly easier watching than trying to maintain your standard. Had to keep the vid's silent, as I don't think the web is ready for my singing, now or in any part of the future. Paul
Excellent episode Gormo. Your manual point control is something we can all learn from, and that is to persevere, with whatever confronts us in this hobby. In the end, you will be rewarded for all the toil and trouble, guaranteed. Cheers, Gary.
Great video. I love the idea of signal box style levers and you have done some very impressive engineering work. Ian
Thanks Guys, Paul.....your singing can`t be any worse than mine......you`ve probably noticed that I decided not to punish everybody with it from now on...... I got worried when Ed remarked that he had found himself humming Gormo`s Shed. It must have been either really good or really bad for it to get stuck in his head. I assumed it was really bad. I`ll let the professionals take care of the music from now on......Hhhmmm?????.....I could just go some popcorn myself.!!! Gary.....you are correct.....perseverance pays off.....I must admit I had my doubtful moments though......solenoids or tortoises etc. would have been a lot simpler. I seem to be a sucker for doing things the hard way even though my Dad always advised me to do things the easy way......I guess I`ll never learn??? Ian......the signal box style idea came from the web somewhere.??....I saw that somebody had actually created the three walls of a signal box to surround their lever frame. I cheated with just a pic on the back wall of the box but I`m pleased with the result. The engineering really is down to using what`s available except for the levers themselves being custom made. The rest of the bits came from the hardware store and the electronics store. http://www.click Gormo
Hi Gormo, One of your best pieces of work I think. Beats anything I have ever seen hands down. It must have taken some time to put the tutorial together as well. First class. It's what modelling is all about. Great to have you back. Toto
Of course, you can also combine both mechanical and electrical, and place a micro switch where the rocker is, and use that to trigger the solenoid / tortoise / servo, but then I'm sure youv'e already thought that one through Signals next then Paul
G`day Paul, I never really considered electrical firing with the levers but it would be easy enough. I got hooked on the complete mechanical system even though microswitches are used for the frogs and LED indicators. For Bamford terminus I`m considering using brake cables with a spring return in partnership with the levers ( same system as push bike brakes). Bamford`s baseboard framing presents more obstacles to overcome and cable would give me more flexibility there and practically eliminate bellcranks. Toto.... thanks old buddy..,,...the clip was put together over a few days.....bit by bit.....editing here and there......rejecting some material due to time constraints and too much detail.....but!!!!......it`s something I enjoy and it distracts ones mind from other things, so it`s not a chore .......it`s fun. I realised that the lever story from beginning to end was only ever covered in instalments so it was time to put it all together and try and make some sense of it all. http://www.click Gormo
Well I`m glad you liked it Ed. Remind me to send you that 10 quid I offered you.... http://www.click Gormo
OK Guys, I mentioned to SWMBO at the time, that Ed mentioned he was humming it to himself. She replied in her no frills down to earth way that the song was awful. I stressed to her it was supposed to be awful but on balance I conceded in my mind that she was probably right. Don`t tell her I told you that.....she`ll never let me forget it. !!!!! So that`s why I decided to pull the plug on the jingle The words Toto.......just for you bestest buddy old pal old chum. C`mon down to Gormo`s Shed Come in and say G`day We might run some trains or do Some other stuff today I don`t know what we`re gonna do But we`re gonna have some fun Down in Gormo`s Shed Down in Gormo`s Shed G`day http://www.click Gormo
I thought the sound track was very good, I would almost say very Rolf Harris esk, but that now is some what of an insult, but "two little boys's" is probably due a re-release Paul
Thanks Paul, But please......no comparison to Mr. Harris. I shudder at the thought of it.... If I do another it won`t be in that style......that`s for sure.!!! http://www.click Gormo
