    :gday: Folks,

Well herein is a condensed ride along the route which comprises the Stathspey Steam Railway.

We were based in Aviemore for two nights and the railway was literally a short walk down the road from the motel........I mean???....what more could you ask for..???

Aviemore is a lovely little community and I assume people would use it as a base in the ski season as it`s only a stones throw from the Cairngorms National Park.

Well when you`ve had enough skiing.......take a ride on the steam train, although it probably doesn`t operate in winter...????...Hhhmmm...:scratchchin:

Anyway if you`re ever in the vicinity, I would highly recommend the railway as a good day out.!!!

The train leaves Aviemore and makes it`s way through beautiful scenery onto Boat Of Garten, then onto Broomhill where the loco runs around and brings you back down to Aviemore via Boat Of Garten again......I think it was about 2 1/2 hours all up.???

    Enjoy the video

Nice video Gormo, Aviemore is also used by birdwatchers! It's the only place in the UK in Winter you can see Ptarmigam (a small Grouse) in it's white Winter plumage (near the ski lift) and of course the Boat of Garten is famous for Ospreys nesting.
    Cheers

    Gormo,

    Great footage.

I noticed the sign offering railway cuisine.

Please tell me it wasn't stale sandwiches and dreadful coffee. Well that was my experience from the railway trolley when travellng from Liverpool St to Norwich circa 1998-2000

We took this trip in April this year, and as you say Gormo, It's a pleasant way to spend a few hours. Unfortunately, as we went during the week, the shed area was not open (only open on weekends apparently) but I did catch a fleeting glimpse of a loco in Caledonian Railway colours, although not sure what type the loco was. I know you went over onto the Isle of Skye as did we, but did you manage to go on the Fort William/Mallaig steam train trip? We've done this three times now, but as it was Easter week, we didn't manage a fourth time as it was fully booked. Also, if you were in Fort William, did you get to see "Neptune's Staircase", the flight of 11 (I think) locks on the canal near Fort William? Scotland really is a wonderful area to visit, the further North you go, the better it gets, and it always seems like I'm coming home each time I go up there (Grandad was a "Wallace", so maybe I have some Scots blood in me!). Glad you enjoyed your holiday.
    Keith.

    Thanks Gents,

Ron I have no idea about bird watching, but I do admire people who have knowledge of such things. They seem to be more in touch with the natural world than most of us. I`m one of the " couldn`t see the forest for the trees brigade " ....I`m afraid.

Cameron.....we didn`t try the food....it`s only a short trip and we got back about lunch time, so we grabbed some tucker in town. The railway does do dinner specials trips though, so possibly the food is OK...?????

Keith we didn`t have enough time to spend a whole day on the Jacobite train. I was happy enough to see the Glenfinnan Monument and then we walked over to concrete Bob`s viaduct. That area is something special. We were overnight in Fort William so there wasn`t a lot of time for much else apart from a look around the town. If you feel like you`re going home up there Keith......you probably are!!!
Actually......to me....you look Scottish. I can just see you in a kilt....the full formal garb.....it would suit you perfectly.

Ed..... glad you enjoyed the film. It`s not as good as being there but there you are....we can`t have everything. I would do it again at the drop of a hat.

I feel I have to get back to Scotland again while I`m still able.....and Ireland too for that matter.....I love `em both.

Superb video Gormo. When I was based in Dalwhinnie and Kingussie working on the overhead electricity line project I was only a stones throw from Aviemore yet I never took the opportunity to ride the line in the two and a half years I was based there. Maybe I should be looking to correct that.

I certainly loved the look of the Ivatt. Beautiful condition. Another great day to mark your visit and another excellent Gormos Shed production. Thanks for posting it up.

    No worries Toto,

You know..??....my brother in law works as an auditor for a major retailer here in Oz. He travels all over the country from north to south and east to west.

He will fly into a location, hire a car, drive to his hotel and drop off his bags, go to the store and start his work. After work he jumps in the car, goes off to a restaurant for dinner, back to the hotel and that`s it. He may do that for three to four days and then back home.

So even though he`s been to some nice places, he hasn`t really seen them because he`s there for work and when work is finished, he just wants to get back home.

To see the sites properly, you have to be on holidays and leave work far behind.

A lot has happened since I was there last. Here's a few photographs I took there in 1975:

    Thanks Wolseley,

A trip back in time........that`s the year I was married....:scratchchin:

I don`t think much has changed in Aviemore.
