    Sorry mate, I haven't.

I suspect it will depend on the origins of the kit - The Gladiator range is made up from a few former ranges, some like the George Norton/Steve Barnfield kits were hand drawn and although buildable the etches do show their age in some respects. Other were designed by David Andrews and have a really good reputation. - Most if not all of the GCR engines are Andrews designed kits. But I don't know about the Stanier Mogul.

    No worries,

I'm not sure of the background of it at all. I have a couple of tanks but would like to have a few tender loco's. I have a couple of Jim's and will be looking to add a j39 at some point. May hang of to Telford for that.

cheers anyway Rob for the info above. I can look further into it.

    cheers

Have you bought one or are you just contemplating it? - I can ask around for you if it would help?

That's a nice loco there Toto I was looking at that kit recently too so I'd also be interested in any members feedback on the build. Now Toto take a look at this one... a Flying Pig described as a brute of a kit to build tho :scratchchin: http://www.acmemodels.co.uk/OGCatFlyP.htm Stoke had a few of the single chimney versions. No prizes for guessing who designed this one... but of course I could be quite wrong.:avatar:

    Hi Paul,
I think that you are right but you/Tom would be far better off with this one - http://www.modernoutline.co.uk/modern_outline_011.html if you are buying one(assuming that we are talking the same animal?) I know that it's probably twice the price but you are getting at least twice the kit and you know that it will be buildable - most of it with minimal solder...

I rather suspect that one of these will be coming on to my workbench at some point since the gent that I am building the J6 (and the Kirk coaches) was having a toss up between the J6 and the Mucky Duck, it was the inside motion that swayed him in the end on this one.

Rob do you have any feedback
Thanks Rob I think the price reflects the quality and ease of build. Sorry I just posted up a new thread before I saw your reply...silly me. I've seen that budget kits are not always good value if they end up in the pending draw, to me a kit needs to build into a loco and not become "lost". MOK are a kit maker I want to buy from.

Toto won't be able to afford to retire if He keeps buying loco kits at this rate, but at least it keeps the kit manufacturers in business!:avatar::avatar::avatar:

Word is that it's a David Andrews designed kit which builds up as it should with no surprises - apparently Jazz over on RMweb built one a while back so a search of his thread may yield something but knowing Ken he will have built it by the time one of us mortals has opened the tissue wrappings.

Thanks for that Rob. Good to know. I had a look at Pauls Nellie when I was visiting his Dundee Residence today. Between that and having a look through some of kits in general, it's got me back in the mood for some soldering again. ..... You never know my Nellie build may take an unexpected push now. :avatar:

    I look forward to it.

Not being one to let the grass grow, I broke open the second Coronation today and I am currently on with two back-heads in tandem.

All I can say is that you must enjoy your work with a passion Rob. I dare say that if ever I was to achieve results half as good, I'd probably have a bit more enthusiasm as well. :avatar:

    Great stuff.

    Cheers

    Hi Toto,

I just had a reply to my enquiry from David Hill of Gladiator

The kit is designed by David Andrews and generally goes together well as you would expect. There is one problem: the frames are too long at the front end and need cutting back in front of the cylinders. This is discussed in my thread on RMWeb:

The Heaton Mersey Mogul - Kitbuilding & Scratchbuilding

Some material may also need to be removed from the smokebox door ring so that the door seats properly.

Make sure that the firebox etch is well-annealed before trying to form it.

One gentleman down under has had problems getting the frame extensions to fit, but that has completely baffled me as to why.

Hope this helps and thanks for the purchase!"

You don't get better than feedback from the supplier especially when he's built one himself.

    Hi Rob,

many thanks ..... fore warned is fore armed. again, it wont be first on my list. What about Gladiator Duchess - unstreamlined. A big build I know but in terms of issues .... are their any that you are aware of ? ..... I would like one but this may be an instance where a commission may come in :avatar:

    cheers

    Hi Toto,

If you are buying direct from David/Gladiator then nothing that won't be fixed - I will qualify, there is an issue with the firebox (I may well have to solve a similar issue on an upcoming build of a David Andrews Princess) but David is having another one cast which he will supply with new kits when he gets it (and retrospectively I believe to customers who have bought one from him).

Again there is a really good recent build by a Gent called Peter who goes by the username PAD on RMweb. - Here Peter has just done a Finney A3 which is a magnificent build.
