Thanks Pete, Yes I now have to work on what will join up to the building, background wise, on the adjoining wall, but that should be fairly straight forward. It should be an approximate continuation of the backscene on the door. Gormo
G`day Folks, Well I`ve been out in the shed today for a little while making a tunnel liner. Had to have the aircon cranking in the train room as it was stinkin` hot outside.....41 at my joint. The train room was reasonably comfortable........anyway I`ve done a video update this time as per below. Gormo
Those are some complicated arrangements with microswitches and point motors, I do like it, but of course it's not all that scenic. My concern with cardboard, especially in a combination of Sydney heat and humidity is distortion of the material. Really conscious of this after last week's storm with water everywhere, cardboard structures would have been either ruined or somewhat changed. I'm concerned about how close the edge of the wall is now to the carriages and that it wouldn't take much to hit if it were to change. Maybe some re-inforcement might be in order, something that keeps the functionality and simplicity of the original that you have. Cheers Tony
G`day Tony, You are quite possibly right on the mark there. Reinforcement would be a better solution, I was also considering making an MDF box instead and then gluing some curved card inside that.??? I will see how it goes in the meantime and whether moisture absorbed from the air in the room plays a part in distorting the shape. Time will tell, but I fear you are most likely correct and I will have to do a re-build. The card in place now can be used as a template. Gormo
and if you replace the card with plasticard, it could be brick embossed type to make it look even better! I am going to have a bash with reverse bending my stone wall mould when I get round to tunnel mouths.
I recall that the odd length of 4" diameter PVC pipe cut to profile always done the trick, but that would be harder to bend as in Gormo's situation on a curve... Cheers, Gary.
G`day Gary, Yeah I`ve done that before on the branch exit tunnel and lined it withe brick paper.......works fine, but as you say, on the curve makes things more difficult. Fortunately the curved section is very difficult to see from the viewers perspective, even when you get down to track level, so that in turn, gives a bit more latitude in dealing with the situation. Back to square one though........the card is working perfectly well at the moment. Gormo
G`day Folks, Back to the tunnel Well I cut some 3mm MDF today and started doing the sides of the fiddle yard It was clamped on so that I could draw some cutting lines etc. Especially for where it meets the tunnel wall I glued a timber strip on the inside to support the top that will sit on there And painted the outside Black. It will need at least one more coat. The top was measured and cut out to suit I had to trim a short length of track on Little Bardfield so that the top could sit on it. The gap between the top and the side of the tunnel will be filled with polystyrene and then plastered over. There are a couple more holes to deal with as well But all in good time When you run trains through there now, you would think they are continuing on straight ahead, rather than making a left turn into the fiddle yard.......that was the general idea.!! The MDF sides are screwed in place and can be completely removed if necessary. Of course just removing the top will deal with most issues, but if serious remedial work is required, the whole shebang can be dismantled. Gormo
What did you have in mind Ron..???? I`ve got to fit an airfield on there somehow........well a low relief airfield.......I`ve got some Nissan huts and some Spitfires. Gormo
Looking good so far Gormo. I will be interested to see what you do on top of the board. Cheers, Gary.
Thanks Gary, Yes this area will be a compilation and will all blend into Little Bardfield next door. I`ve always fancied the little station at Bampton in Devon http://www.exevalleyrailway.com/bampton for it`s scenic location and I also like Brize Norton & Bampton http://www.fairfordbranch.co.uk/Bampton.htm on the Fairford Branch in Oxforshire. So what I intend to do is morph the two of them, taking what I like from each location, add in a bit of artistic license, and away we go. The thing with Brize Norton & Bampton is that it has an RAF base next to it, so a low relief freelance RAF base will be sitting on top of this area, but it will be just the far end of the base with a couple of Nissan huts and some Spitfires parked. Little Bardfield station will be modeled on Bampton in Devon, even though mine is on the curve, and the landscape will rise up behind the station as it does on the real thing. So it`s a compilation of ideas Gary, and using little features that have taken my fancy at some stage or another.? Gormo
If you don't have the 'vision' Toto, you are flying blind ! Sounds like you have it planned out well. Looking forward to the next few stages of the build. Have you considered obtaining a pic of an air field that you could use as a back scene behind the nissen huts ?? This image below belongs to Paul Freeman from his site : Abandoned and Little Known Airfields : http://www.airfields-freeman.com/OH/Airfields_OH_Akron.htm Just think how easy it would be to change the name Poorman Aircraft Services to B.Gorman Aircraft Services....!! Cheers, Gary.
Good one Gary, Yes I was thinking of a background pic, but initially I was considering one looking down along a grass runway.........probably hard to find.....I like the pic you posted. Anyway......here`s a video update. Gormo
