As some of you are aware, recently I purchased 3 x Hornby (Rollingstock) Gresley Teak coaches, R4174 Sleeper, R4172 Corridor 3rd and R4171 Corridor 1st, each at about $30.00 Au (£16.00). I would like to expand this very short train to include a Full Brake, Brake third and some other 1st and 3rd coaches.

Firstly, I would like to know, did the LNER mix Gresley coaches with Hawksworth coaches and possibly Mk1s ??

Secondly, the livery. As I have Teaks, I'm finding it hard to purchase these now, apart from Sleepers, how often were they mixed in rakes with Carmine and Cream or BR Maroon ??

    Cheers, Gary.

One thing Gary, the LNER would never have mixed their coaches with Hawksworth's. Hawksworth was a GWR man. As far as mixed liveries, more than likely in the early BR days they would have been a bit of mixing but the teaks were repainted in Carmine and Cream and some even went into maroon. In latter days the teaks and Mk 1's could have been in mixed formations. If you use Ebay or something similar in Aussie land you might be able to get hold of some of the excellent Kirk coach kits. They represent most of the main line stock and also some suburban stock. They do make up into very nice models.

Let the guys at Train Trader (Pymble) know what you are after so that they can watch out for you. I make a point of letting them know when I am after a specific item. Many times they have come through and they were cheaper than Ebay.

I have a teak 3rd/1st class coach here which I will send to you to add to your collection. It's from the old tender drive Flying Scotsman set so plastic wheels with the white trim.
The coach number is 22357 but I don't have a Hornby R number for you.
Send me an email with you address and I will send it out to you.

    Steve.

Hi Steve, I have a collection of the older Hornby Teaks, but the ones I am after are the super detailed models.

After trawling the web, I did find a lovely pair of Teak coaches, consisting of Hornby R4598 and R4600 on picclick : http://picclick.co.uk/Hornby-BR-Gresley-Teak-pair-R4598-Brake-252525828503.html

I have seen other Teak coaches selling anywhere between £40.00 - £50.00 each !

They will be on there way to me shortly and Jack doesn't know...! ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

Jack'c coaches arrived today. He had no idea they were coming. I got him to hold his hands out and placed the boxed models in his hands. Big smile on his dial ! Ofcourse we had to get the other coaches out and his 'Flying Scotsman' to make a train... :D

Even though these coaches were some of the earlier Teaks Hornby produced (darker teak finish and deeper grey roofs) they do look great in a rake. Sorry no pic... I checked out Hattons this afternoon and they have a 2nd hand Teak Corridor Brake for £58.00 ! I'm stoked that I paid £68.00 for two coaches !

    Cheers, Gary.

Nice buy Gary. Glad it bought a smile to young Jack's face.
