I had one of those in the mid-1960s - simply branded as Tri-ang, so slightly earlier than this one. It is, I am sad to say, no longer with us.

I did, however, purchase one last year, although it is one of the later Hornby ones. One of these days I will get around to converting it to three rail so I can run it with my other locos - one of those jobs I am going to get around to some day. It is also in LMS red livery, which I will have to correct to Caledonian blue....

Mine doesn't run - possible re-wind of the motor and replacement magnet. On the plus side, these old ex-triang X04 and derivatives are a doddle to convert to DCC, a second piece of insulation on the other brush to insulate it from the spring. Then Black wire to the chassis, red to the pickup plate, and orange and grey to the motor brushes (change these over to get the direction correct). For this and the Duchess I'll probably use a TCS T1, it can cope better with the higher currents these can sink.

lord5.jpg lord7.jpg Smart little locos I've got 2 'Lord of the Isle' green singles, if I remember correctly the motors are the same (XT60) compact ones as used on the Tri-ang turntable.
*A word of caution when handling/purchasing these locos, the small brown boxes and leaf springs either side are prone to fall off and disappear, and sellers rarely tell you, mine are ok but replacements are costly.

I had an LMS red Caley single with a body and tender in perfect condition but with a knackered motor. I also had a Tri-ang Lord of the Isles with a beautifully performing mechanism but a slightly battered body and tender. I combined the two to get a Caley single that was also a good runner. I three railed it using a Marklin skate and also put uninsulated wheels on both sides of the chassis (I used the old black style, not the newer ones with the shiny treads) and also replaced the bogie wheels with spare pony wheels off a couple of 0-6-2 tanks, in the hope that they assist with current collection. It runs well although I suspect the back to backs of the wheels may not be quite spot on, which I will have to check and adjust where necessary. All that's left is to fit Dublo couplings.

I also have a one of these. A Lord of the Isles, Hornby one of the re-releases of the early 2000's I think. It came from flea bay described as 'as new', and low and behold was still wrapped in tissue paper and no evidence it had ever been run. As Paul says above conversion to DCC is a doddle and she runs very very well. There's always something though …. the only problem I have with it is not the loco, but the tender, it often bucks/jumps pretty hard going over points or crossings. And that's due to the 'fully floating' nature of the two separated wheels on their axels paying absolutely no respect to any back to back tolerance. I've been thinking about a fix for some time but wonder if anyone else has done something that 'works'. I'd been thinking of trying to glue the wheels together (not on the axel) at the correct B2B, slip that back on the axel 'loose' to allow a little sideways play or 'lock the whole thing up' by gluing the wheels to the axel at the correct B2B, but I fear that'd cause more problems.

Actually, she's such a pretty thing in red, I don't really want to change her and, in any case, I've moved the era I'm modelling (I'm talking about my scale models, not the Dublo and Trix) forward to the early LMS era since I posted that comment.

Here she is, fully operational as a three rail loco, although a small amount of minor tidying up remains to be done:
