Hi Ed, I like the use of the old Hornby/Triang station buildings. How about a chimney at the far ends of each building? I like the original roof as it takes me back to my first trainset way back in the days of System Six track. Ian
Hi Ian System Six, that's going back a a bit. Seem to remember one of my then school friends and I moaning about the 'new' system six not connecting very well with what we already had. Did a quick GIMP on the picture for chimneys at each end. I originally bought these with a view to just using them as a former and building something around them, but I must admit they've 'grown on me' since I slapped a bit of paint on, fixed the crack in one of the canopies and decided to go more Rail Blue. Beginning to think I'll leave as is. Attached files
Hi ed, coming along and the walls look the biz as well. Keep it coming. maybe your enthusiasm will rub off on me and I'll get something done myself. Going blue as well ....... mmmmmm now we're talking. cheers Toto
I wouldn`t count on it.???? I`m having trouble cracking on myself. Ed.....it looks good to me.......maybe you could try printing a quick back ground to go behind it just to show you what it may look like. Possibly one or two pages of the backgrounds that Gary put a link to. http://www.hall-royd-junction.co.uk/Products/Scenic_Backscenes/scenic_backdrops.html Cheers Gormo
Hi Ed You could tart the roof up by sticking a layer of tissue (toilet roll) to the felt area using liquid poly, paint grey and rub talc on it to weather it down a bit. As Gary suggests replace the glazing with fresh acetate, but cut sticky labels into strips to rebuild the glazing bars. Avoids the risk of liquid poly spoiling the acetate. Mind you for the size, you may be able to use microscope slides for the glazing. Paul
Not sure about enthusiasm Toto, lot more thinking than doing! I'm sure it's something to do with the time of year. There always seems to be a general malaise in the months after Christmas and it takes ages to get the light morning and evening back. Good idea to play around with backgrounds Gormo. Might be able to try out some different ones in GIMP, if I can get my head around 'Layers'. Quite like Matt's suggestion of a more industrial setting as there are warehouses to the right in the picture. Hadn't really considered that before. There are glazing bars behind the masking tape, although some are broken and I was thinking maybe a repair with bars from the back windows which won't be seen. I think microscope slides might be too thick Paul, but I'll take the masking tape off and do some more pictures. Did even consider replacement windows, but there's no point in spending mega-amounts on detailing when it only cost 99p. Defeats the object a bit. Ed
Doesn`t matter what you use for a background Ed.....what is amazing is how it completely transforms the look of the railway.......definitely worth some trials....just stick them on with some BluTac to test them out and see what may work for you. http://www.click Gormo
Have you noticed though, how most back scenes depict a beautiful summers day with blue sky. I want something more normal weather conditions, grey murky and misty Bit like what I've stuck behind the goods shed (Which reminds me, must do something about finishing putting brick paper on the goods shed, and the temporary fence needs replacing before the 25Kv OHLE goes in). Haven't really got very far. Did the skyline a few weeks ago, but I've only just got around to putting the terrace houses on. (Too cold). I've got a low wall to build to go in front of the houses and the platform will then get extended back to meet the wall. Well, that's the plan anyway. Ed
It's coming together nicely Ed, quite atmospheric already (must have been hard to achieve wearing mittens) Ian
Dunno about mittens Ian, need some Arctic boots when the wind whistles round me ankles Aaron on the other forum mentioned I needed to do the back scene before putting the catenary up Toto, and I thought ooops, that's a good idea Ed
G`day Ed, Haven`t seen the old Latton Fields for a while and by crikey what a difference the back scene makes. Things can only get better in my opinion......well done old son..... http://www.click Gormo
Thanks Gormo. Only problem is I'm a house short of a street (better than being a sandwich short of a picnic). I bought these preprinted to save ink on my printer, but I think I'll have to buy the download version and hope my printer produces another house more or less the same colour. Ed
G`day Ed, Does it have to be a house..??? Do you have anything else that would suit????....shops, industrial, factory, shed etc..??? I`ve got a couple of buildings etc. that I have been fudging......one is the Lion brewery and there are others assorted. I can send you some files if you would like to try them.......just PM as usual. http://www.click Gormo
Thanks for the offer Gormo. Not sure what to do as yet chaps. I could build another dummy warehouse back as I have on the right hand side of the above picture, behind the pipe heavily disguised as a chimney. Need to figure out getting around the black wire anyway, which is the mains feed to the consumer unit. Could curve the back scene round the wire, or box it in, or maybe another smaller chimney Need to put my thinking head on. Ed
Back scene is finished for now and I've managed to disguise the wire without resorting to another chimney..... still need to refurbish the station buildings and put a ticket barrier in, but you can see the houses (just) through the entrance. So before the catenary goes up, there was just a little bit of track work to redo. I've been planning on replacing the diamond crossing that links the storage yard to the layout since last June and someone had suggested a single slip, which won't fit because of space. However, I'd worked out two small 'Y' points would do the same job and provide more operational flexibility. (You can tell how old the next two pictures are, as there is still an engine shed in the top corner). So yesterday, while waiting for glue to dry... Hence my thread on wiring Peco SL-E97s. Ed
