This Line side Fettlers Hut is from a basic laser cut card and sheet plastic kit produced by ModelOKits.
It represents a generic New South Wales Railways iron clad lineside fettlers Hut with line Trolley store.
These were found all over the railway system
Link to a photo of similar but slightly larger structure.

When ModelOKits produced a cheap kit for one I though why not as it would make an interesting addition it’s sat like many kits waiting until tonigh when I couldn’t sleep and decided that I may as well do something rather than nothing.

These kits are a bit like scratch building but someone has cut the basic frame parts out for you then you do the rest cutting the parts from styrene sheet, etc then it’s a matter of using PVA glue to stick it all together I used Quick set PVA set to a tack within a minute or so with in a couple of minutes it’s solid enough to add more bits

    Parts as per instructions

The basic construction is laser cut card that you then Overlay the plastic formed iron sheet to.
As I tend to do with these kits I didn’t build quite as per the intended design but customised it slightly by building it in the reversed orientation, also the instructions had you glue the roof sheet to a piece of card then stick on top of the walls this gave a all round card edge to the roof this didn’t look quite right so a change was made and the plastic “iron sheet” was attached to a section of card intended to fit in as a floor this then located neatly between the walls.

The instructions have you gluing the doors to a second section of card and then mounting in the fully closed position this I changed for the access door having it in the open position and the work area door was made to look like it wasn't closed fully and then the Trolly door closed.

The piece originally intended for the roof was used as a base to mount the building on with walls on top of instead of as per the instructions around the edge of the original piece.
This gave room for the rails the trolley would have used to enter one bay at the level of the ground and look like they went under the door not stop in front of it.
Doing this little mod will allow timber sleepers to be placed as was often seen around the rails or even concrete in later years. Two rails were soldered to copper clad sleepers and then glued to the floor the sleepers won’t be seen once the rails are infilled with the timber to the rail head height.

Ready for some paint it took me longer to write this little post than build to this stage

The not fully closed door adds a little character.

Tidy looking kit Chris, good idea regarding the roof, it will make a big difference to the look. Some weathering and the job will be a guddun!!

    Hi Pete
Thanks looking at it with out the card under the roof sheet it was the right decision. The good thing with these kits is that they are a bit like scratch building but without having to do all the cutting out of the sub structure everyting after that is sort of free hand so it’s easy to go in a different direction.
Yes it will get a good dose of weathering once I give it a prime then a squirt of steal gray, however it’s raining cat n dogs here at the moment so paint will have to wait :faint:I’m very impatient if it wasn’t raining it would have got a quick prime last night :avatar:at 2am

Yes it’s quite a universal kit in that way you could open it up to make a farm shed or even a little workshop.
I think I will get a second one this weekend at the O scale forum meet I’m going to and make it up differently. At equivalent of £12 it’s worth it
