I don't know about " in no time " but I'll get there. here is the vents soldered in place .....

    a close up ......

    and another .....

the soldering is ok. Granted, there was a bit of clean up but not that much ..... I'm happy so far ....

    onwards and upwards ....

    back later .....

    cheers

ok ...... the body was next .......

    starts of like that.

then its folded and the first side starts to go on .......

    and there we have it......

and then the second side goes on ........

    and an inside shot.

    and another ........

but life does not go that easy ........ does it ?

I put far to much pressure on the parts when trying to hold them together whilst soldering ........ and buggered one of the ends.

I have straightened it out a bit but you can still see it. I'm going to continue anyway. A bit paint and some powders and it will not be as noticeable . One lesson learnt for when I move onto van number two.

    cheers for now

all will be revealed in the next post as I forgot to photograph it. ( Rob Pulham will give this one the thumbs up though ) :avatar:

    cheers

A bit of a stall as I cut out all the sub-floor members and there is a few of them. They all need individually bent to shape ( a C channel affair ) and the flash filed off each one.

Once the sub-floor is all cut and prepared, it will be soldered into the finished grid assembly before being soldered to the underside of the van body.

Then ...... it's white metal time. There are various metal angles, hinges, straps and of course, the axle boxes and brake assembly. I'll finish the soldering elements first then it's out with the two part epoxy.

Maybe a little more later before going out for a beer.

    Cheers

OK ....... I've finished cutting out the floor members. Filed the excess fret flash off, bent to shape and done a test fit on them all to see they will sit straight.

They are all ready to go.

that will be where I pick up tomorrow as I am going to walk one mutt then go for a well deserved beer.

Its been quite enjoyable so far apart from the little screw up earlier. however, I have about 10 of these vans in the three different guises to build between the Ply, the planked and the van wide models so I should not make the same same error going forward. It was wholly avoidable.

They look nice little vans so far.

    more tomorrow

    cheers

Nearly forgot ........ my secret weapon ........

I see what Rob means ..... add a little flux along a seam, add a fraction of solder and watch the flame chase it along ........ brilliant.

    cheers

Lovely work Toto, yes Mr Pulham's secret weapon is a superb piece of armoury because it can also be used to separate etches if they become misaligned when soldering, a good way to hold the etches together when soldering is to use hairgrips if micro clips are not to hand... all that is needed to hold the pieces together is gentle pressure that's all, absolutely no need to make a tight clamp fix because the brass has to move when hot and distortion must be avoided. The "error" can be fixed using Green Putty once the body is primer painted and any surface damage to the corrugated corner can be disguised as a rust patch... get a few vans done and I'll kick that weathering thread in which will show the techniques I use... promise honestly.

    Hi York Paul,

I'm quite happy that it is recoverable. It's not really that bad. Just the usual inexperience kicking in. It is coming together nicely otherwise and will finish up ok. Back to it tomorrow.

    Cheers

...and I'm finding it difficult to get my plastic kits built and you are definitely forging ahead with your brass kits. So, if I do run out of time, can I send you over my Nellie ??

    Cheers, Gary.

Ooh dear Gary... please don't set the seed of an idea :avatar:... as they say patience is a virtue and we have yet to solder those axleboxes in. But yes its great to see a rake of vans underway and hopefully with mine also next year Luib Bridge and Another Bridge will have some super looking trains on display.:tophat:

Oh boy ..... you are a brave man. :avatar: I will be jumping back on to my nellie once I have three or four wagons under my belt ( successfully ). I reckon that will be a couple of weeks away. The first is always the hardest and slowest. I should get into a rhythm with the next couple and get them knocked out quite quickly.

I don't think Nellie is hard really. Albeit the one and only soldered joint I have done on her, I managed to get the part ( buffer beam ) upside down so the first thing I will need to do on recommending the build is to decoder it and start from scratch. :avatar:

Now ........ do you still want me to do your Nellie. :avatar:

You horse on and get it built and if you fancy a go at something a little harder ...... I may just accommodate you.:avatar:

    Cheers

    Toto

Now I'm not a fortune teller but here is my Platform1 prediction for what will happen here over the next few coming days... hmmm I see something flat and black and made from stone and also quite heavy... yes I see our Toto going to B & Q to invest in a marble bread chopping stone. Wait a minute I see more loco kits arriving, yes I can see a 4-6-2 Clan Pacific and oh yes also a BR Standard Class 3 tank engine looming on the horizon, this Swindon built machine will make our GWR fans very happy indeed and I predict also Mr Ennis of Scorpio will be very pleased to see how his sales have suddenly taken an upsurge. :avatar::avatar::avatar::avatar::avatar::avatar::avatar:
