Hi Everyone here is the start of the build of a Hatchette Mallard. The kit was left to me in a friends will. I started on the cab. Each window side is built up form four layers plus the moving window (yes I got them to slide. ) Then the doors these open and shut too. The etchings are coated in a lacquer that is a real pain to remove to solder. so after a few joints I started to glue things together. any way here are some photos. Be seeing you Bob
Great kick off to your build thread Bob, what an intricate piece to put together... looking very nice.
One of the things that puts me off gluing etched kits is that there is very little contact area for the glue. I think I would find some method off removing the lacquer, probably putting it in acetone for a couple of hours or so, then polishing the metal before soldering. Cheer's, Pete.
Very nice build Bob. I'm with Pete with the Acetone (or the cheaper nail varnish remover), and a clean up with glass fibre brush. Paul
Hi All Thanks for the comments and tips I will give the nail varnish remover a try. ( I will have to get more) Rob I am using a cynocrylic with a fillerincorporated in it. (I used to use this stuff at work to repair copiers it has a great bonding strength. Next is the backhead and the chassis. Be seeing you Bob
Bob this is a great thread and very captive because you are using different fixing methods which is interesting. I once saw a video on YouTube talking about using a hold and fold, the chap used cyano to hold some of the small parts as a tack before soldering and also glued other small overlay details. That looked like it worked for him and I've built JLTRT wagons before and glued white metal casts to resin parts (a different story I know) and these have worked. So here's me following your great build thread.
Thanks Bob, I must admit I have had good results with the thicker Cyano's but I don't really rate the runny stuff.
For what it's worth I use Roket 5 minute cyano which I get from Laurie Lynch. Incidentally JLTRT locos are back in stock again now, boy if you thought prices were expensive before you want to see them now.
To be honest, I wasn't mad on the one piece resin shell on these and the prices were ridiculous as well so the chances of me buying them is really non existent. I bought one closed van kit which I must admit I was pretty impressed with but won't be back for more. To think that they are more expensive still has sealed their fate. There has to be a limit to what folks will pay somewhere.
Put another £200 on the cost of this kit for wheels, motors, gears and delrins. Don't forget the pick ups also. https://mm1models.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=108_114&product_id=701
Hi all I have managed to do some more on the Mallard. I have decided that this is going to be a static display model. I have the perfect place in the middle of my mantle piece. So no motor or pickups or gearbox. first the roof then the Backhead and the painted version Be seeing you Bob
Here is the tender Now if anyone is going to make this model I would suggest that you read through all the parts first before starting the build as you have to go back and forwards or drilling and fixing in some awful places . Also there are some place that you reverse the order of the build. The next photos are of the tender sides and you will find it a lot easier to fit the lower part in this next picture first as this gives the fixing position of the upper part in the picture. here is the side built now the running part of the chassis and the outer shell sorry about the pics being a bit dark new camera to get used to. Hi all I am in the need for some help please. I have come to drilling out the cross heads for the Mallard. The only problem is the metal is so hard none of my drills will make a dent in the metal. I was wondering if heating the casting up would anneal the metal enough to drill trough. of if I should ask DJH for replacement parts. Any advise would be most welcome. Be seeing You Bob
Hi Keith You are so right. Now to wait for the Garter Blue. I ordered this from a reputable retailer over 2 weeks ago. I got an email today to say they had not got any in stock and that it will take another two weeks to get it into their stock so another two or three days on top of that for me to receive it. So I canceled the order and ordered from another supplier. I hate that it took two weeks to let me know they did not have it in stock. I will let you know how I get on. Be seeing you Bob
