There was more gum flapping going on tonight than train running Hopefully there saving them selves for Next weekends exhibition 2 full days of shunting trains around the Moonan Flats Yard, and talking Platform1 The CPH rail motor got a run up and Down by its owner who has decided to leave it at Moonan Flats for the exhibition next weekend so that will be double CPH rail cars They spend most of the time in the bay platform idling away And a mixed Freight made it's way into the Flats behind a new fangled diseasel thingy, but didn't get shunted 4905 as far as it got may have failed and is waiting for a Steam loco to arrive to the rescue. The eagled eyed may have noticed a few different items of rolling stock with Moonan Flats being so small it doesn't need that much rolling stock so most of my stock is packed away however Whilst doing a reorganise of the storage during the week I swapped out a few wagons and coaches, got to even out the Ware & Tare these models travel several feet every running session, at least 8ft some time may be up to 20ft if it gets shunted around the layout wouldn't want to ware them out Attached files
Very nice 38 Chris. I won't say to much now as I want to ave my gum flapping for next weekends P1MRC promotional talking.... Cheers, Gary.
Gary wrote: Thanks Gary yes plenty of honey during the week to lube your flappers Will give the big green monster a good oil and steam her up soon. ianvolvo46 wrote: Thanks Ian. Just think how beautiful it will look steaming round. I think and every one else also agrees that it has a slightly different shade of green than the last one I received hard to tell in the photos from last night due to the indoor lighting but it is a more pleasing Green if that makes sense.
At exhibitions you alway have an extra Loco or 2 and some interchange stock, now these have been in a box on a table that always ends up with something on top of it as well so you can't access it easily Answer was to have the items on display so I a knocked up a folding display shelf that is 2.50m long it is formed in the L style construction for strength it sits atop of the layouts picture box frame I have now added a Perspex front to protect the stock from accidentally falling off At 2.5m it's the length of the scenic part of the road layout and when it is not needed it will fold up to half its length. I fitted 2-suit case latches one to hold the middle together when set up and the other for holding it folded at half its length I have now painted it black, installed the track it works well, To the front I added some Perspex so there will be no falling locos A photo of the display shelf on top before I added the Perspex Attached files
Toto I always find that people want to see all the trains in the fiddle yard etc and if you have some in a box they are always asking what else is in the box so I figured why not put them on display. Gave it a second lick of paint today and got a set of handles to make it easy to Carry It will also make a good table top test track too when not in use as a display section above the layout, I will add some wires and a plug after the exhibition
Now it's time to decide what locos to take to the show on the weekend as with O scale space to carry locos and stock is a big part of exhibiting a bit of a "Big" problem really. So I all I really need is 3 locos and a railmotor on the layout But for reasons if you have a failure plus a bit of variety say 2-3 spare locos to swap out during the day for a bit of variety What to take ?? To fill the roster for "15 hours" of operating. Currently the short list is,one of each of these classes 1, 19 class 0-6-0 tender as it's a great shunter local goods 2, 30T 4-6-0 tender for the local passenger or goods. 3, 49 class Diesel for grain train. 4 32 class 4-6-0 tender for goods or passenger. 5 38 class 4-6-2 tender passenger Extras on the short list 6 20 class 2-6-4 Tank, goods or Passenger 7 30 class 4-6-4 Tank, goods or Passenger 8 50 class 2-8-0 Tender, goods 9 25 class 2-6-0 tender, goods, 10 36 Class 4-6-0 tender passenger or goods There's lots more but most of the Diesel's are really too big as well as most of the heavy mainline Steam are really too big but one of the 5 C38's is a must as they are a NSW favourite even if not suitable for the branch line Rule 1 applies plus it's the most requested loco. Decisions decisions
I would bring some of my locos but your track is a tad too wide.... Nice display box atop the layout. Cheers, Gary.
I have a project under the planning stage, it is going to be a real place modelled as near to scale as space and cost let me. One of the things that is going to be considered is rolling stock, as on the real railway they only used 2 locos most of the time, LNER J69's, and occasionally an LNER J15. Do I stick to prototype or go for operating interest? At exhibitions I note that most people viewing don't watch for long periods, so probably wouldn't notice the same loco coming and going, but for the operator, it may be more important to have variety. Anyway that is for later. People do tend to hang their noses over the fiddle yard wall so I guess lots of different stock is a must, maybe . Cheer's, Pete.
Gary wrote: Thanks Gary you just reminded me I have left the display box out in the sun drying after the second coat of paint the suns long gone now Just pull the wheels out a bit on the trains you bring Pete I do find a lot of lookers return several times to look over the layout so variety probably is the go. Even when operating Gary's Industry lane it was noticeable the number of time people keep coming back and it's not the good looking blokes running the Railway, although The small layout thing down under is a relatively new concept a lot of people look at the hobby at shows here and are put off thinking they need these great big layouts that have been the norm at exhibitions however over the last few years small layouts have gained momentum and popularity partly as city housing has got smaller, plus as an individual they can see it in the terms of I could do that and finish it and get a result as a one person Railway.
The fold up display section folds out to 2.45m and sits atop of the layout to store the interchange stock Attached files
Plenty to choose from there Chris. Just take your favourites. Pete, go for the J39. Do you already have one or will you need to buy it in ? Cheers Toto
Toto, the J39 is a cracking loco, I built one of Big Jims, in fact it was my first O scale loco kit, it went together really well. I wish I hadn't sold it. Pete.
Toto wrote: Locos Packed ended up with six as the transport safe case had a spare spot so added a back up loco. 1- Big green loco 3805 the kids like this one adds a bit of colour 2- 1903 the little Goods loco that never lets you down 3- 4905 a dirty diesel well it is now got weatherd this afternoon was way too clean. Interchange locos 4- 3108 good for passenger or goods 5- 3213 passenger or goods 6- 5235 2-8-0 Back up loco if we have a failure And we have 2 CPH rail Motors if all else fails we will just run these in and out of the station very prototypical Pete I'm with Toto a J39 would be a nice loco the J39 would be at home on a small or large layout. Found this have a look for some inspiration. https://youtu.be/I-62-UGByTw
