:hismiley: 2 more Locos join the DCC sound fitted roster for Moonan Flats

I haven't done much over the last couple of weeks but was feeling 1/2 OK today well enough to to sit down and put some life in too, two of the old O scale Locos that where still DC powered
These two Locos were wired With the loco one side rail pick up via the chassis and the tender get the others rail also via the chassis not so good for reliable DCC signal pick up
So with the use of some PC board strips the Locos and tender chassis got new pickups the loco and tender chassis are now the same polarity no chance of shorts if the tender touches the loco.
This required removal of the tender wheels and swapping the non insulated wheel to the other side, then Add the PC strip and phosfore bronze wire wiper pickups and to also have the pickups not very visible.

The decoders are TCS WOW sound and as can be seen in the photo a 23x23mm speaker is fitted between the frames on the 19 class complete with an enclosure I made to fit between the frames, I usualy like to try to get the speakers in the boilers but wasn't an option on these Locos

So tonight two new/old Locos joined the Moonan Flats loco roster.
    The NSWGR 19 class 1903
    [IMG]

Next the NSWGR 30 class 3108

Still a bit to do some more new detail parts and some painting and weathering to be done.

With the two Locos able to now chuff there way to Moonan Flats I ran a full sequence of the trains on the layout
Two goods trains and the loco hauled and the Rail motor Passanger service

Hi Chris - a nice solution and may be copying it for the 4F tender.

You may want to put a little insulation between the copperclad, and the gearbox, just in case.

Thanks Paul I looked at the photo this morning then went straight out and checked the 19class as a thought I had a good gap when I fixed the copperclad in place and can confirm that their is a gap must be the angle of the photo the same as with the speaker it is about 5mm to the strip in the photo looks about 1mm

Now I have run and tested the 19class loco the copperclad and wipers will get painted and won't be seen easly under the model.

The 30 class 4-6-0 needed a lot more work as the loco body sat 7mm to high a result of it having orignaly been built for corse scale 3rail wheels now with correct size Slaters fine scale wheels a bit of modification was needed to get it down to the correct hight.

Whilst the models are not to a high fine scale standard they do convert well to fine scale wheel standards, look the part at viewing distance and are very Robust

Hopefully the weather is good tomorrow as we are planning to run on a friends out door layout

Some nice modelling there Chris, the layout is starting to look a little crowded :avatar:, love your dads diesel, I would love something like that but no space for a layout to do it justice :(.

Lovely locos and a good job of replacing the wheels.

Interesting to see you have the 30 Class modelled with the six wheel tender. If I remember correctly, there were not a lot of this Class coupled to the six wheel tender, most having the bogie tender. Very nice indeed and the 19 Class, one of my favourite little locos. I have one of the original 100, Sentinel Models (white metal) in HO scale.

    Cheers, Gary.

Gary re the HO Sentinal 19 snap on that with the motor in the 6wheel tender, so there only 98 others out there.

Gormo your going to have to share the Lotto with my wife as she said she's winning it too :avatar:

As far as the needing to win Lotto for O scale, if I didn't have really big plans for a big layout In O I would only need a hand full of Locos not that expensive when you consider how many new OO offerings you could currently be buying every month.
When I was working ie good income it wasn't unusual for me to get one or two or even 3. new Locos a month granted I wasn't paying full retail due to my connections with a hobby shop, so I was collecting say 24 plus OO/HO Locos a year add that up over say 15 years and it's a lot so 10 years ago I decided to stop dabbling in O and start modelling it seriously and now I dabble in the other scales, So it makes the one or two new offerings be it kits or RTR in O look more interesting $$ wise as I'm not getting one of every new OO/HO loco that comes out, not to mention the wagons etc as an example I have a collection of Bachmann windcutter mineral tipplers the train is 38 trucks long looks impressive behind the 2-8-0s and that's just the one train, but in O scale I only need a train to be 6 trucks long and it looks impressive so I guess it all works out in the end to be about the same unless you want the 30 plus wagon train in O then you do need lotto.:avatar:

The other Big thing we don't have any kids so between Shelley and my self we both have hobbys that take the funds that a child would take to raise, also we don't drink Alcohol so there's a new Bachmann wagon each week and I've never smoked so say a few packs a week if you smoked at the $$ they are hear in Oz, now there's a new loco a week, this hobby is starting to look cheap now..:scratchchin:: sorry for that last bit guys  but that's how I justify spending $$ on my hobby.

O scale on the cheap but out of the box RTR

Dapol Terrier and the IXION Hudswell Clark, Spring to mind as some of the best value models available in O and their small size makes that big 30 wagon train just silly so 8 wagons a guards van would make a full complement on a small layout. :scratchchin:

    Hi Chris,

Good stuff mate. I suppose how deep you decide to buy into the hobby is a lifestyle choice. I've been the same to a degree whilst I can afford it but that could come to a crashing halt anytime.

    Enjoy it whilst you can.

Seemingly Toto is after the lotto win as well, he was caught praying to God for a lotto win - God replied "meet me half way and at least buy a ticket."

Hi Gormo and Crew Re the lotto and wining, Shelley must be the most lucky unlucky Lotto player as it is rare to not get at least her money back each week with some minor division win Just never the big one  you should see the Disapointment if when checking the ticket and it says not a winner.

And the wining ticket start going to another agent, Shelley's most winning tickets come from a single agent near her work, the non-wining are from our local never won a single cent from his agency

Paul your right can't win if your not in.:avatar:

Toto yes things can change really quick so make the most of it "now" "for me it did change":faint:

I think I've maybe bought two dozen tickets in the whole history of our lottery.

Just doesn't register with me to buy one really.

Hi all, I agree with all that has been said regarding our hobby. Whether by illness, retirement or any other life changing event you have to go for it by whichever means possible. £€¥$ (have I missed anyone) are important but coping when building our miniature world is by far the more satisfactory. As for the lottery it makes our dreams and takes us away from harsh realities but y'know what I look at my second-hand 0 6 0 with its repaired buffer beam and revamped motor and think.... the dream will have to wait ... only next week I'll make sure I don't leave the ticket in my shirt pocket so the other 5/8ths doesn't wash it.

There ... that was a short eulogy from 'Ian the Sop's fables

As for Toto purchasing a ticket I though he only bought used ones to save on the pennies

Well when you can't do the the sitting down thing for too long I decide to install a fence to the front of Moonan Flats as it's mostly a standing job stand and paint stand an fit to layout.

It's a timber post and rail style very rustic with timber that has scene better days, Only its not timber it's cast white metal

Started by getting a section of old card board and mounting the parts to prime them with a gray base then a shot of mat black then a light dust with gray again
    [IMG]

Next a quick splash of "Mig" aged wood wash then a brush over with some brown powdered pastels to highlight the timber grain.

I will do some dry brushing of the fence now it's in to hilight the grain a bit more.

Then drill some holes and plant it along the front edge of the layout to add a little more scenic interest well it didn't keep the sheep in so it must be to keep the trains in the scene :avatar:

The fence extends to the join between the boards and a path way will be made from the timber crossing (still to be made) for station staff to cross, and head to the goods yard road crossing.

Now to find what I did with the scenic supplies and make some grass tufts etc may even try Gary's trick of making flowering weeds for a bit of variation to the grass

    G`day Chris,

That looks great and I think you`re right about adding some variation to the grass.

Trouble is the sheep will probably eat the new stuff and bring it back to a manicured lawn look.

Just about every paddock I drove past in NZ looked as though they had vacuumed it before we arrived.......it`s the sheep mate.........sneaky ....neat little wooly suckers.!!!

Thanks Toto,& Gormo for the comments

Toto I thought it was only the NewZealanders that had a thing for sheep is their some thing your not telling us :avatar:

Gormo yes a bit more static grass for variation is the Go this area was well grassed but everyone has to touch the grass so it soon wares down, so in one way makes sense to make a sheep paddock if the sheep don't mow it the punters will.

It goes some thing like this "Is that static grass", as you start to reply yes and please don't ---rrruubb it  to late
And they are saying wow that feels nice. :scratchchin: and the feeling that one of Totos big Hammers would be nice to fix the fingers.:avatar::avatar::avatar:

Shelley even made a sign that says "keep off the grass" but that doesn't stop them, It's all adults, the kids get the sign and don't touch.
