Nice work on what looks like blackberries in the creek bed, the bane of a surveyor! Was wondering if the corner posts of the fence should be braced in some way. A nice brace makes it easier for a surveyor to climb up and over the fence into the next property! I need fences like this in real life.
Great work as always Gary. An inspiration to all.
    Cheers
    Tony

Looking fantastic Gary, the little details like the rusty barrels etc really give the scene life. Mind you how you managed to drill holes in tooth picks I will never know, my eyes would be well crossed if I attempted doing it :avatar:

    Hi Gary

That is looking just fab. The rusty barrels and sole plates are very realistic! A new post on how you did it please.

Do you have any problems with the magnets uncoupling trains that are just passing through? The only experience I have is with the fixed kadee magnets and they are a pain as the slightest jerk in train movement can leave half the train behind as I tend to run very long trains. I have had to go under the layout with my router to remove them but it would seem from your posts that even if that becomes a problem then they can be removed easily. This seems to be the answer to my problems. Cost?

    Cheers

    and happy modelling

    Richard

Apologies for the late reply, but it's better to be late than never !

So to answer a few questions...

Dr Tony, I will do the corner post bracing. I have a small piece of timber ready to go, it just needed painting to match the posts !

Pete, drilling the tooth picks was certainly a lot easier than the star pickets ! The tooth picks are twice the width of the styrene. What makes it easy to drill is my opti-visor magnifying cap thingy bob.

Chris, I was hoping to get the fertilizer shed near complete over the weekend, but I need to erect the backscene first. I do have a half decent backscene to go on, it has been sized, printed and now just needs to be pieced together and fixed to the 3mm MDF back board.

    Toto, thanks mate.

Richard, the sole plates, pick, shovel and crushed barrel are from Uneek Model Products. They are from kit no. 554. The other vertical barrels in the pic are from Kerroby Models. Both products were purchased from Joe at Casula Hobbies.

These were all sprayed with Boyles clear matt sealer (from Bunnings), before applying powders with isopropyl alcohol (IPA). By mixing black and deep rust (red) together then adding a small amount of IPA, you can paint the powders on. The IPA will weaken the surface of the clear matt sealer which helps it stick permanently. I gave them a light dust of clear matt sealer once complete.

    Ian, thanks mate.

    Cheers, Gary.

I spent today installing the new back scene that I photographed last weekend and used the methods outline in this thread : http://platform1mrc.com/p1mrc/index.php?threads/photographing-and-creating-a-back-scene.2798/

The individual images were printed out on a laser printer as I wanted this back scene to be part of the build and when shown (exhibited), it will be used as a tool to show the public that you can print your own back scene at home. These images were glued to 3mm MDF and I did choose to overlap each scene rather than cutting them perfectly down the seem. From the viewing distance, it has come up ok. I think the back scene suits the scenery quite nicely.
    I hope you agree... :scratchchin:

This pic below shows the joins in the papers quite clearly, but from viewing distance, you don't really notice it.

    IMG_4903.jpg

You can just make out the overlap in this pic below...

    IMG_4901.jpg

Now..., I will say that I did do a little boo boo...

I measured the length and two ends of the layout, before I entered the specifics into the program. I opted to have a 5mm border around the edges of each print, although I did select the right hand side and the bottom only... Well, once printed, I sprayed them with matt sealer, I laid them out and realised that they are a little short of the full length, including sides... :whatever:

This will be an easy fix as I can print out a blue sky scene and add to the left hand end of the layout to complete the full distance.

Oh well... regardless, it still looks good to me... Now I wonder if my local printer can print this scene out on a continuous sheet...? :scratchchin:

    Cheers, Gary.

Blue stuff : pronounced blu stuf. Commonly known in Australia as 'clear skies'. Some folk from the northern hemisphere (UK) may not recognise this and think that it should be termed as 'grey stuff'....

    Cheers, Gary.

Thanks Sol, Ed, Ian and Toto.

I must have been lucky when photographing the areas around the south of Sydney last weekend. I must admit that after the recent rains, I thought that I may have found the locale photographed as being too green. Luckily this was not the case !

    Cheers, Gary.

    Gary looks great
Your local large format print shop or even a sign printer should be able to do in one long image.

Shelley’s friend at the No Limit Digital print shop said he can do these last time we were in and talked about. Said can do up to 5m
