Thanks Gents, we move along a little bit more.

    Now for the wood.

Up until now all the trees on the layout have been individually put together using different techniques as I experimented with construction methods. Fun, but time consuming, the woods in the photo below are a gradual accumulation of individual trees over the years. There is a bit of a canopy...

But here above the tunnel, while I'm happy with the look it just doesn't say Welsh woodland to me. Neither does it to SWMBO who has been pretty clear that "the canopy just isn't dense enough".

The other thing is that I want a wood on the hillside above the village now. So I did a bit of research online and found a good tutorial on how to make a wood on a hillside by MarklinsofSweden.

His video tutorial explains the process better than I can with photos alone but I'll give you a quick demo in case it helps someone.

The process uses the microfibre common in modern pillows. SWMBO got this pillow from spotlight for $4 Oz.

Next, tear some chunks off and then, while wearing some of those cheap disposable gloves, work cheap poster paint well into the fibres. I've used a couple of shades of green and some black and some burnt umber.

This little lot will last me a while and only took about 15 minutes to prepare. Got to let it dry of course.

I wanted to see tree trunks around the outside of the woods and created a perimeter with twigs from the garden.

Start at the bottom and edges with a single layer of darker coloured microfibre and then, after spraying with the glue of your choice, gently cover with a layer of darker green fine flock. I used woodland Scenics blended turf. This represents the undergrowth in the wood. Next, layer up the lighter colours of the microfibre. This photo was the first wood and it doesn't show the undergrowth layer which was a later refinement, but you get the idea.

A view from over the mill side of the hill.

And one looking over the village.

At this point the jury was still out but then after adding first, chunkier bits of home made flock and then increasingly lighter coloured layers of fine scatter, I was pretty much sold on the technique.

Glad I didn't waste too much sweat on the trees on the back scene.

In the above photo you can also see the spreading static grasslands as I experiment with my static grass applicator. Just at the front of the photo on the bank to the right of the road (out of focus), the patch in front of the Kestrel buildings has grown and I found a summer green colour at my local hobby shop that matches the field colour on the back scene.

NOW I'm feeling like I'm getting somewhere. Lots more detail to add yet though.

    Cheers

    Marty

    Thank Paul and Ian,
    Moving right along...

I should be working on the job application that I've been working on all day... but all work and no play makes Martin a dull (if unemployed) boy so they say...

    I'll be quick...

Great progress Marty. I hope the 'overseer' isn't pushing you too hard or cracking the whip. He/she looks comfy on the towel !

    Cheers, Gary.

She's a terror for work Paul.... As long as someone else is doing it:lol:

Layout is in a spare bedroom Ian, the plan assembly and all wood work happens in the double garage/ workshop.

Great stuff going on here Marty,

It`s amazing to see the transformation on the trees. When I saw the bright green in the first pic I though " Hello that`s different?"...thinking it was very bright, but then you`ve added the other shades of green and built up the canopy to end up with a stunning group of trees.

    Well done Maestro :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

    Thanks Gormo and Toto,
I'll be experimenting with the base colour of the microfibre to see if it makes a difference to the overall "green" impression of the wood. Once it's covered with scatter foliage I suspect not.
Darker green for the undergrowth certainly and a lighter green for the upper story seems to work well.

    Here's a a little bit more.

In between doing the woodwork (for the station base board) I've been doing the ...ah...wood work [IMG]

Another wood has appeared on the hillside above the road and closer to the front of the layout.

And from further south over the Henllan station yard.

And while he was here my son made one too. This is Phill's wood on the right at the top of the hill.

Still working on the Henllan village scenics in between doing other things...

Beautiful work on the trees (woods) Marty. I, like Gormo thought that the bright green was a bit stand-outish, but what a transformation. Excellent work indeed.:thumbs::thumbs:

Have you considered dying clumps of the polyfill in different colours, ie from browns to greys to greens ?? Or are you sold on the bright green ??

    Cheers, Gary.

    Cheers Gary,

No, not fixed on colours, still experimenting. I'd imagine different woods and different seasons would need different shades.

Here I'm trying to depict early summer woodland similar to that I have in my photos, thus the bright green.

I have made a couple of darker tints that I use as the first layer of undergrowth before topping with the brighter green.

I'll to try some greys too. Good thoughts. Thank you.

Baseboard shape cut out, 30mm deep strips of 12mm MDF (left over from the sheet used for the base board) cut and ready to be applied as support beams. Circular saw in place to split the base board to match the joining point between two parts of the L-girder frame work.

Bracing glued with liquid nails and clamped up while drying...

... and temporarily in place while the vertical supports are levelled and fixed in place. Some place holding buildings plonked on to help give an idea of what is going to go where.

Unfortunately, the distance between the stations at Henllan and Newcastle Emlyn is too short to allow prototypical signalling and absolute block control as it should be but I'll work that out as I go along.

    Hi Marty,

Nice wood work there. A bit awkward to cut I'd think, a steady hand needed on the jigsaw. I like the use of the lattice type supports.

    More please.

    Cheers

    Thanks Toto,
A steady hand on the jig saw is required although in this case the bite out of the front just needs to be close enough to the sketched in line.
It will just be modelled as a wooded scenic break between the upper and lower levels.

While the glue dries on bits and pieces I've been skipping between scenics and the NE station baseboard.

The view break hill between the mill and Henllan has a waterfall on the mill side.

and the idea has always been to have a spring at the top of the hill and a stream feeding the falls. Over the last week or so this has slowly taken shape with reeds and longer static grass around the spring and sand, rocks and PVA water in the stream.
    From the west side...

From the north east above the fields...

... and from the east above the waterfall...

In the meantime the supports for the NE Station baseboards are complete and they'll be up next... just waiting for the glue to dry before I move them.

    cheers
    Marty

You are a marvel at the scenics Marty. Love the waterfall and spring, great job.:thumbs::thumbs:

Will be looking forward to the continuation of the thread and how you will connect the two levels together with your amazing scenery.

    I`ll drink to that Gary,

Lovely stuff Marty.....you obviously know you way around cutting and joining board. It has a professional look to it.

I also like the tracks made by the tractor in the field......very realistic.
