    G`day Folks,

I just got back from a trip up the coast to our favorite holiday destination and we got sick of looking at this stuff.

There was a storm coming anyway!!!!

So we moved onto the Hunter Valley. We had heard through the grapevine about a little town called Paterson, which apparently has a lot of charm. Sounded interesting, so off we went knowing nothing.

We followed a convoluted path of roadways and back roads to our destination, passing through very small communities nestled among green paddocks and valleys populated with cattle and horses. I wish I had taken my MG but the weather was not suitable. Fortunately I was using my GPS ( Frank ), so I knew he would get us there eventually. He`s a nice guy but he get`s a bit shirty when you change the route and then he has to re-calculate......oh well it keeps him on his toes.....my little electronic mate!!!!

Anyway we got there, only to discover that it has a railway passing through it, and the town itself looks like it was pulled straight out of the nineteenth century.

This Google map link will show it`s location.

    Paterson

We explored the town and had a delightful lunch at the pub. It`s hard but somebody has to do it !!!!

As you may be able to tell from the pic below, it didn`t take long to explore the town. This was taken around midday.

What became obvious to me was that this little town and railway would lend itself quite nicely to a model of same. To the left of this picture above, is a steel girder bridge which takes the line north over the Paterson River.

To the right of the railway crossing , the line proceeds along to Paterson station almost directly behind the town. The station has very basic buildings that would be easily modeled. The line is single track with a long passing loop through the station which would have fed the goods shed and associated sidings. The whole set up is quite compact even in 1:1 scale and could create quite a simple, pleasant model.

This is the main station building with a small dock for loading/unloading. All weather board construction and restored and maintained to retain it`s character.

Just to the left of the station building is this other little building which seems would be suitable for small items and parcels.??

This is the platform side of the same little building

The waiting room.......at least it`s under cover. There are only three trains a day, so it won`t get too crowded here.

Looking south along the platform. Passing loop on the right.

Looking north along the platform and yes that is a rail motor down the end there.

Now looking directly opposite the station platform at what was I guess the goods shed. The camera has distorted the view of the tracks for the sake of getting more in the pic.

Those buildings across the tracks now house The Rail Motor Society

They were not open on the day but it is obvious that they have restoration projects going on here and also working vehicles. Again all of which would lend interest to a model of the area.

So there you are folks.....a very pleasant interlude on a rainy day up north!!!

Don't know how I missed this post Gormo, very interesting. I searched for a track diagram of Paterson, but couldn't find one. You would imagine that most of the original loop lines and sidings were pulled up and then to be replaced as the Rail Motor Society saw fit to service their own sidings etc.

Here is a little more info on Paterson Railway Precinct :

    Cheers, Gary.

Could be an ideal subject for a 'plank' maybe?

    Yes possibly Keith,

It`s a main line though with XPT`s and coal trains going through. A bit of artistic license though could turn it into something interesting.
