The detail in the moulds is impressive, if the rest comes out as well, this will be some model - how big is the rake going to be - 12 coaches maybe :avatar:

Test castings 3 lower from old batch of resin not formed 100% and slight colour variation, top 3 casting from new batch of resin this flows nicer and is giving better filling of the mould consistency with across the length consistent thickness unlike the older resin

They look great Chris, I have a resin 6 wheeler coach kit in the shed, it is appalling, I was thinking of using it as a pattern for making one in plasticard, after seeing the results of your casting I may have a go at casting my own!

    Cheers, Pete.

Sounds like a bit of work coming up Pete the urithane can be a bit of a Chalenge at the start
I use a quick Set PVAto glue it together and plasti bond to strengthen at corners as needed
The best thing to do is clean up all the parts and and see if they will fit together do any mods first then make your mould

    Chris

Up to your usual high standard.

I think my friend with the subs might need to come and talk. He could glean some things from you

Btw where did you get the carriage plans from?

Great work Chris.:thumbs::thumbs: Very nice, crisp moulds indeed. Did you cast the mould off a model or scratchbuild them ??

Really looking forward to seeing these coaches develop. Keep the good work coming.

    Cheers, Gary.

Cameron you friend with the subs would really like what My friend John is building it's a Japanese midget sub from scratch he's slowly doing bits in between making oneoff 1:43 scale model cars mainly classics that have never been mass produced for people that want a model just like the one in their garage, and the model trains and tram bits, for the midget sub he has a copy of the scale plans drawn originally by the Australian Navy, the body masters are well underway it is a impressive looking bit of kit even at the master stage,

John is the master caster of bits he drafts up plans and he runs with it next thing there a perfect copy sitting there and you only start with a photo or Basic line drawing.

John also has contacts from his drafting background that really assist in the model making, (those models you see that are for building project high rises etc etc) those guys have access to lazer cutters etc that the rest of us can only dream of for making parts that go into the master to make moulds off.

This photo shows the laser cut window frames for the crown light windows and the overlays that form the glass frame etc

As for the original railways plans anyone can get from the rail historical research centre but some of the ones we have have been around for many years being work shop drawings.

There are lots of drawings to source from in the panel files one for goods one for passenger

Going to do a 4 wheel wagon next will be a good how to I think not over the top like the 72-6" passenger cars.

I must admit I'd like to know how to do resin casting and possibly the mould making too, as It's something I've never done but wouldn't mind having a go at. Over time, I've bought odd resin castings from sellers who are obviously low volume 'home business' folks, but it could be a useful asset if there was something I wanted that just wasn't available commercially. Over to you, Chris.

This has been on here before, I made some araldite brake shoes for my Andrew Barclay scratch build, using domestic mastic for the mould, it would be no good for anything large but it shows what is possible.
This is the plasticard box with the plasticard master glued in side

I filled the box with mastic, I used cooking oil for a release agent, it took a couple of go's to get it right.

These are the finished brake shoes on the loco.

These close up pic's are cruel but they do look better painted in the flesh, so to speak.

    Cheer's, Pete.

Cheer's Chris, it was something I saw demo'd at a model rail show 5 or 6 years ago, the guy was really good at it, way better than my effort's, but he was doing it regularly so I imagine the more you make the better the end result, this was my first (and last) attempt.

    Pete.

Started painting the carriage side castings today.
I ran out of primer being so big they take a lot of primer to cover both sides I'm guessing you would paint 15 + HO/OO models with the amount needed to cover a coule of these O scale models
I will need to get more on Monday.

    Some of the sides primed

Been painting the car sides in what is referred to as Tuscan and Russet
[IMG]VHO and MCE paint going on by CHRIS, on Flickr

I used a bow pen to add the yellow waist lining
Been a while and first time using Acrylic Tamya paint so had a few practice goes on the not quite right Guards van casting that I painted then moved to MCE Acyrlic isn't as easy as the old humbrol enamel
But all out of Humbrol yellow

[IMG]VHO and MCE paint going on by CHRIS, on Flickr

and now I the paint is dry I am now fitting the windows there are all individual windows to give a realistic look rather than the clear strip behind the window frame, they consist of main window pain and the crown light above 76 in total, then 4 single doors glasses and the corridor connectors have 2 each so 4
    84 individuals windows to install
The idea was that these are laser cut and should just drop in however this isn't happening there mist be a bit of tolerance in the laser cut as am having to file each to fit as are slightly random when they should be all the same

2 hours to fit 20 :hammer:
It will look good in the end but it's repedative:faint:
More tomorrow I think eyes are hanging out after having only 3hours sleep in the last 40 hours
