Just been watching some of woodland scenic how to videos. I was looking to see the general build up of different grasses and foliage etc for my rock outcrop and mountain ridges.

I already have a few turf types in fine and medium blends but came across something that his nibs and I were talking about on his last visit yesterday ........ purple foliage for Heather. Also yellow stuff for gorse bushes. So, after watching the video I nipped onto Hattons website and ordered up a few products.

These should help set the rock scene off nicely. Just think ........ Heather....... disnae get much more Scottish than that now does it. ......... wait until his nibs finds out.

Still waiting for the delivery from Hattons even though I paid extra for 1 day delivery. Not impressed with them. Hopefully it will arrive Tommorow. I've cut a narrower path route up the rock face on Luib Bridge which some of this stuff will help to establish. I also have our scenic / weathering wizard on Stanby to dig me out the brown stuff when it starts to go wrong which should not be too far into the exercise. :avatar:

    Cheers for now

This picture may be of use Toto, I made the purple weed/bramble mix from woollen carpet underlay, I teased out the fibers removing fluff and the coloured threads until I had a small bundle of what can best be described as the contents of a vacuum cleaner bag. I then sprayed the fluff with a drab olive green colour and oversprayed it with a light dusting of silver, when dry the "fluff can be dipped into coloured scenic mix then set in place with a spray glue.

Tom if you like when SWMBO and I come North later in the year I'll bring a piece of underlay so you can do the same if you want... the nice thing about this method is it is best going on after all the other scenic flock/static grass/ under scrub has been fixed down.

    Feel free York Paul.

Just had a call from Hattons. Apparently my order has been returned from yodel everything has been damaged in transit due to my scenic cement having burst open and contaminated all the other goods. They then tell me that one of the items marked as being in stock is on pre order ( even though they've charged for it ) and it will be next week before replacement items will reach me. I paid for one day postage . Needless to say I cancelled the order.

That's the last twice I have been let down by them. I think our relationship is suspended.

    Toto

Back online looking for another supplier now. PITA.

    Cheers

    That's not good news.
While you were waiting you could try Gormo's method with the foam rubber, I recommend the foam underlay, using the coffee/spice grinder route. Purchase artists acrylic to get the colour you want and it comes up a treat, at least in HO/OO scale. It's hard to find stuff in colour round here, just the Woodlands stuff in purple, which would be great for a Jacaranda tree (good for my layout, not so much yours I guess). We don't get gorse here luckily, but we do get a weed known as Lantana in rail corridors, it has pink to white flowers, will have to make these myself.
Michelle recommends something like Seed Beads, they can come down to 1mm in size, which I have looked up, but all the ones I have seen have holes, apparently there is something like that without holes, they are for scrapbooking so I would assume they come in different colours.
    Cheers

    Thanks for the ideas

    Cheers

I have yet to play with home grown (foam/grinder/colourants)scatter, but in the mean time, have you discovered this supplier Serious-Play Scenics yet? They have a vast range of colours!

I've ordered stuff from them in the recent past and delivery is by Royal Mail, always packaged well and delivered within three days from order. I think you will be impressed.

Now on a slightly different note but staying within the theme of non delivery today I phoned a well know provider of model railway "ironmongery" to ask what has happened to my hold and fold which I ordered a couple of weeks ago over t'internet, was told they were waiting for suppliers to manufacture and were very sorry for the delay. I said well it didn't say it was out of stock on the website when I paid, so he said he was very sorry again and offered me an old stock hold and fold which was silver in colour, I said is there any difference between the old ones and the new ones which you haven't got yet, he said basically no only the colour ... the new ones are gold coloured. So I said how much?... baring in mind I'd paid with postage added the sum total of £44, he said (after a slight pause) how about £32 including postage, I'll refund you the difference now (which he has kindly done) and pop it in the post. So I said ooh yes please, now I have an identical hold and fold plus a touch over eleven quid back in my account... so the moral of this little story is "all that glistens is not gold". :avatar::avatar::avatar: Actually they were very good about it but it shows how overseas manufacturers work the situation here.

A nice discount. Pays for the shortfall in initial service. ( and honesty ).

    Happy folding.

Whilst waiting to get back on shed, my brain is back on Luib Bridge's scenics. I have created a path up the side of the rock face and since its on top of the profile and therefore topography, I want to introduce a little dark brown into it as some soil would have been existent and washed down from the top level. A sort of Petey soil.
It's just a narrow strip and I'm thinking that it should go down before the surrounding grasses as the grass would have grown through the soil, not the other way around. It won't be much but it will be there.

Just thinking out loud. I also like the burnt muted greens with a little straw like colours coming through. A little heather and gorse will finish it off. Maybe the odd peat bog with some black, dank, stagnant water. I could take you to the exact location off the old Calander to Luib line. The odd crappy I'll formed Silver Birch starting to struggle it's way out off the rock face just waiting to be brought down under its own weight.

Almost sounds poetic. My skills are wasted here. :whatever:

    Cheers

No I wouldn't fault them they are in the hands of overseas suppliers, but it was a nice gesture and I shall go back and buy again from them

All the research material you need is right there on your doorstep, the railway may well have disappeared but the Nature and topography hasn't for sure and to me its that type of observation of detail which can make a good layout into an outstanding one. But hey Toto isn't Luib Bridge going to be DCC with background sounds going on? You could recite poetry played from tiny speakers in the carriages... :avatar::avatar::avatar: a sort of merging of disparate subjects, poetry and model railways... well not sure about disparate merging for audiences maybe more like desperate audiences :hammer:. But never let anyone think Platform 1 MRC doesn't break new ground. :avatar::tophat:

Obviously, you have more stock than your supplier.

If you are using saw dust, this will require more paint to get the colour you want than required for the foams.

For my flocks, I minced the saw dust, then passed it through a sieve. The bits that didn't pass through, was stored seperatly.

My base green was equal parts Daler Rowney Graduate Acrylic Range Raw Umber and Sap green

Reddish Brown - Daler Rowney Graduate Acrylic Range Raw Umber + Burnt Sienna + Yellow Ochre

For the more mutted burnt out colours try replacing some of the base green colours with a little white and yellow ochre

Small amounts at a time until you get the shade you want - it will dry a little lighter, so worth making a batch up and leaving for a couple of days.
