I have designed 2 hollow core door (1980mm x 710mm or 78" x 28") single industry USA switching layouts. Using PECO Streamline code 100 points and flexitrack. Running Digitrax Zephyr DCC. They can be connected together in two ways. I have 99% of the locos, cars, buildings, vehicles etc needed, bought over the last 5 years.

I like the idea of vision boards to picture the finished layouts.

Can be connected as a straight layout or an L shaped layout.

    Enjoy :)

Hi Allen, what a very clever plan, very versatile, lots of interest and with the option to add / extend if so desired.:tophat:

Nice track plan. It will keep you very busy shunting/switching the different industries that abound. What will provide the motive power for your layout ?? I could imagine either Alco S4's, GE 44 or 70 Tonne switchers, EMD SW1500, or I could even see a GP10 or GP35 doing the rounds !

    Cheers, Gary.

My favorite loco's are my GP7's and GP9's from Athearn Genesis. They are very good runners so will use them.

My complete roster below does not include the two GP7 Tsunami2 locos above I bought at a train show last week.

They are all sound equipped apart from the small 44 Tonners and the Bachmann GP9. I also have sound equipped stock cars from Broadway Limited.

    Did I mention I like sound :)

Thanks for reminding me to add sound  to the layout.

Will this do for ambient sounds coming from inside the buildings :)

Get a video up with a sound demo. There as a member of YMRC forum recorded his own sounds onto a chip. Hammers clanging and stuff then silence, footsteps walking over the concrete floor, a door opens , someone has a pee, toilet flushing, a fart then footsteps back to the work lace ..... Hammers .....

    My kind of humour. :avatar::avatar:

Funny you should say that Toto because I made this outside privvy for the crossing cottage on the Elton Crossing layout I commissioned Andy Sollis to print me a Twyfords Adamant as well and I often thought about a sound chip of the cistern flushing and a servo to swing the bog door wide open. :avatar: Sorry I'm getting carried away now.

I would just point out that the resident crossing keeper at Elton Crossing was a big woman who wore a hairnet and pinny, she looked like she'd eaten a hornets nest for breakfast... :avatar: I can see why British Railways withdrew the post and transferred the job to the signalman.

As others have said a very clever plan Allan.

Hollow core doors make incredibly good baseboards. I have used them a few times.

    Kind regards

    Geoff

The best thing about modelling North American is the cost of the locomotives, not to mention the great variety of rolling stock. For example, an Athearn Genisis with quality sound (Tsunami) retails around the $245.00 mark. That is equivalent to £185.00 !!

    Cheers, Gary.

In New Zealand we do not have the population/demand to get those prices. The USA retail (Athearn website) for my latest GP7's is $US290 = $NZ435. I got them from a NZ retailer at the model train show for $NZ400 each. Duty alone would be $NZ150 each if I were to get them from the USA. :(

The modelsound units are a great solution off the shelf, but if you have a bit of PC savvy to mess with sound files, here are three other options.

Wireless Powerful Portable Bluetooth Stereo Subwoofer Speaker, less than £10, perfect for ambient sound and can play what is on a *TF card or drive via bluetooth from you phone.
Mono MP3 player, Lumsdonia TIP204 plays whats on a *TF card
Stereo MP3 player, Lumsdonia TIP205 plays whats on a *TF card and can 'pan' the sound.

By attaching (soldering) wires to the last two, interactive sounds can be switched (tied to loo door opening)
I am working on a fourth option to run sound from an Arduino!

There are several websites were you can download sounds, there is even one were you can mix your own configuration and download:cheers:

*TF card = Micro SD card

I think you should have a quick journey (holiday break?) across the ditch and come back with some very well priced items from a number of OZ based retailers.

    Cheers

    and happy modelling

Thanks, I have all that I need for my layouts. The two new locos were a want not a need purchase ;)

Thanks, I had been playing around with the DFPlayer Mini and Micro SD card sound files wired up similar to the image below.

I bought the Modelsounds units to compare as they are very small, using a Micro SD card and built in rechargeable battery. I installed my own sound files.

BTW. Your website is very informative.
