As another form of introduction here is some information about the history of my most local railway line! I have lived in Ashton-under-Lyne for 15 years and have walked in Longdendale and travelled on trains on parts of the route of the old Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway. This is the first of a few posts about that railway company, particularly about the Woodhead Tunnel. https://rogerfarnwor...ester-railway-1
I am sitting in a coffee shop in Rochdale at the moment waiting for a meeting. Hopefully you will find this thread interesting this is the second, if short, and it provides links to websites which focus on the line: https://rogerfarnwor...ester-railway-2
This third post gives us details of the short history of the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway Company. https://rogerfarnwor...ester-railway-3
I well remember on our occasional trips to Sheffield many years ago, seeing the 'Woodhead Electric' loco's passing over the "Wicker Arches" into Sheffield Victoria, but Sheffield still had it's trams back then! Keith.
The walk along Longdendale on the West side of the Pennines is a good one. The steady and shallow grades on the walk remind you that it was once a railway line.
