This afternoon I played around with one 3-way point and one small right hand point with the idea of building a new exhibition plank for next years Epping Model Railway Club, which will be held at Rosehill Racecourse in June.

The baseboard will be 5' in length and 1' wide. So far, all I have done is had a fiddle with track design and siding placement. The sidings will not be the traditional 5-3-3 wagon lengths, but 3-2-2 and another single siding along the throat which will be positioned roughly where the red wire is right of the scalpel.

The three way point has come off my Kelly Bray layout as I am stripping it down to provide track for the Juwair & Sajour Rail Road, my US themed shortline layout.

The grey wagons behind the loco are fertilizer hoppers which I bought in Newcastle when assisting Chris with Moonan Flats a few months back. The loco is a Trainorama NSWGR 49 Class, a great model which I have had now for quite a few years but hasn't turned a wheel ! I'm thinking about adding sound to it...

On the table in front of the Trainorama bag is a 'junk yard' of my old NSWGR rolling stock which may just get resurrected when I find all the missing bits... If not, I could always model a scrap yard, similar to Sims Metal opposite Sydney Airport....

    More to follow...

    Cheers, Gary.

What sort of dimensions are you looking at for the layout Gary

Thinking that may be I should do what we talked about with the South Australian Rolling Stock for the Show. As I think I will struggle to get enough operators to take the big O scale layout to the show then I could take 2 small layouts HOn3 Rio Grande roundly it will look after it self and the HO nook with SA stock.
That will give us 3 layouts for the Platform1 arena :giggle:

    Hi Chris,

The layout will be 5' x 1'. I think this will be the smallest I have built, unless I finish the Townstreet project (Waspen Street) which is 50% complete... ;)

If I finished Waspen Street, I could take two layouts to the exhibition... :scratchchin: After all, between Jack and I, we have two NCE powercabs... ;);)

    Cheers, Gary.

    Hi Guys

Does this mean that the Epping show is now confirmed for Rosehill? I f so please put me on the volunteer list if such exists.

    Love the Trainorama 49.

I have two both with sound. Although of limited use , one already suffers from the split gear syndrome. Very difficult to fix even though I have the replacement gear from Trainorama. I think I will just give up and end it to the Trainman in Coffs Harbor unless there are any ways for me to fix?

    Cheers

    and happy modelling

    Richard

Yep, the exhibition is at Rosehill Racecourse.

Thanks for putting your hand up Richard. The more helping hands we get the better. Always good to put a face to a name !

Yes to Rosehill as confirmed by the exhibitors info pack.

Re the 49s split gear s. Don't go sending it away, Not hard to do yourself, if you only have the gear/ axle part use a back to back gauge when refitting the original wheels to the new gear, or if you got the full wheel and gear set easy remove baseplate from Bogie it is the side frames as well on the 49 I think similar to the 44 they take about 20min to do the set.
If you don't feel confident and can wait till the show I'm sure it will be a good project for the demo table that I believe young Brett is going to be part of we will have it done and back in service in no time

Brett will not be joining us this year as he will be a 'door attendant' on the Red Rattler set running that weekend from Central, as part of the Great Train Festival.

    Cheers, Gary.

That's a shame it's moved to Rosehill from my point of view at least.
Is it for hall availability?, size? or price?
One of our highlights was always the vintage bus from Hornsby station, but they may be able to get a bus run from somewhere else since the Carlingford line doesn't really count as a service due to its woeful frequency.
Seems to be a long way from Epping.
I like the idea of the NSW Inglenook, have been thinking about one myself so will be watching with interest. Just about to start a new layout myself, suitable to take to exhibitions in the boot of a sedan, it will be a child-friendly timesaver.
Always preferred the 47 over the 49 class, even though they both look quite similar, guess that has something to do with living near the Goninan factory where the 47 class was built, for some time;)

    Cheers
    Tony

I will have another go at removing the base plates so I can get at the gears. I have the full gear sets so if I can get the base plates off without destroying them then heres hoping. This has been a real problem with my locos and even though most have had little use, I have two 44s one 47 one 49 and even an AR kits 45. I have even seen posts where 44s have come to grief even though they have spent their lives as static displays.

    Cheers

    and hopefully happy modelling

I meant to add my views on the move to Rosehill Racecourse. I am lookimg forward to being part of it but as to the location, in the words of the great novellist Stephen King "Everything is Evolutionary". When Epping started at the High School, there was limited parking, horrible access and cramped exhibition space.

The move to the Brick Pits achieved great exhibition space but still even more limited parking (as its patronage increased) and horrible access via the parking lot know as Pennant Hills Road.

Rosehill offers great space, huge parking areas and guess what....access by TRAIN. In Sydney we will now be able to offer two annual venues just like Melbourne with Caulfield and Sandown. I do not wish to take away from the visionary people at Epping who have presided over these changes but in the future it must become the Rosehill Model Railway Exhibition (managed by the Epping MRC).

As to the 30 minute train service, surely it can be augmented by a shuttle service from Parramatta or Clyde running either our vintage single deck electric suburbans or our fine old rail motors. It is just a matter of planning and asking. A train to the train show...sounds OK to me.

    Cheers

    and happy modelling

Unfortunately on the same weekend as the Epping (Rosehill) show, the Red Rattlers will be doing the rounds from Central with the Sydney Train Expo. It would be nice to have the two communities come together and have the Red Rattlers run to Rosehill from say Lidcombe (as there is available bus transport to Lidcombe and a large multi storey car park) and back as part of the ticket price or for an additional charge...

Personally I don't mind the change as it is far easier for a lot of exhibitors (including myself) to access. I also get to go home each night as it is only 30 minutes away and not 1 1/4 hours away... One ongoing problem with the Thornleigh site was that there was always track work on the North Shore line that weekend, at least for the last three years !

The venue is around 63% bigger than The Brickpit, which means two things, either more layouts or more trade stands. This may mean that the cost of the trade areas will possibly go up and the exhibitors earn less... I was talking with a retailer today and he is in two minds on why the venue was chosen and how it will affect his turn over...

    Cheers, Gary.

A couple of goodies for the new plank...

From top left to botton right we have : one NCE PCP (Power Cab Panel), one NSWGR two bay relay hut, one four wheel NSWGR K wagon kit, one load for the K wagon and one NSWGR HGM/HGX gondola.

At the exhibition this year there will be a competition for the best presented HGM/HGX wagon, using this particular kit... Will I enter this I don't know, it will depend if I want to super detail this kit or use it as is... :scratchchin:

    Cheers, Gary.

I have a sneaking suspicion that super detailing is imminent.

Well I have thought long and hard on the small inglenook layout and have come to a conclusion that it should be a little bigger, but not by much. It has grown from 285mm x 1500mm to 400mm x 1800mm ! This will enable a better length sidings and I can stick to the traditional inglenook rule of 5-3-3, and a lead of locomotive plus 3 x wagons.

The longer siding (top right) is approximately 760mm long. This will allow for 5 x hopper wagons whereas the lower two sidings are 500mm long and allow 3 hopper wagons, or what ever other stock I will have running. There is a possibility of four new BCW (bogie cattle wagons) joining the fleet. A small kick back siding will also be included for additional scenic value, this could possibly have a cattle race, or I may choose the lowest siding on the right for this.

I will be building this up on a pine frame, the same method as I have used on Jay Dubyew extension (Juwair & Sajour Rail Road), which is a 19mm x 42mm pine frame and 3mm MDF top. 30mm thick insulation foam will be glued to the top of this to allow for some sculpturing below rail height. A road bridge (trestle type) on the far left will be built as a scenic break.

The fertilizer shed will be constructed from 3mm foam core and laminated with corrugated card. This building will be approximately 55mm deep, possibly with an awning.

    Cheers, Gary.

Nice little plan Gary I think you would have compromised the visual effects with the smaller size so good call there.

Be interesting to see all this come together.

Are you going to work 4 wheel truck like the S and K as a pair to keep with the inglenook 5-3-3 size scaling with the Bogie vehicles?

I would need to purchase new 4 wheel wagons to do that Chris. Although I had quite a few S, K and RU wagons a few years ago... But I thought I could throw a K wagon into the mix to make it a little harder to juggle ! ;)

Baseboard has been built and I'll be gluing the 30mm foam sheet down tomorrow afternoon so that I can progress the track laying and wiring over the weekend.

    Cheers, Gary.
