G'Day, Thank you for having me. I offer you some background on myself... I am an American, living in England (I had the pleasure of living one year in Australia in 2001). I've been into Trains since about 1953 when a Lionel set appeared under the Christmas tree. Things progressed over the years and I have built several layouts and exhibited a few since moving to England in 1980. I model in HO scale (American), N scale (American), 00 scale/4mm (British), N scale (British) and have dabbled in 009 Narrow Gauge with an interest in HOn30" Narrow Gauge. I will post a link or two to my web page showing an earlier layout, Willow Creek and also link to some of my recent labours, Agony Bay Terminal, 2nd Street Yard. But for now it's nearly midnight and I will need to retire and let those of you in the upside down end get on with your day.

Oh, the reason that I asked to join the group? Well that's easy. I somehow got directed to a link from Gary for the layout 'Industry Lane' (which I found riveting) and then another article on 'HO exhibition Layout' and I spent several hours on the computer, realizing that I could learn a lot from these guys. I basically couldn't resist requesting to join.

Delighted to see you have found your posting feet. You will not be the first to follow Gary onto the forum. His work is excellent and he has a huge following. We are delighted to have you on board and will look forward to your layout threads in your own time.

Like yourself, I'll be hitting the sack shortly as I have Paul travelling from Dundee down to my neck of the woods in Edinburgh tomorrow ..... Or .... Is that just about today. :avatar:

You may get thrown from time to time as to which part of the hemisphere we belong to as we can be caught posting into the wee hours on many occasions.

It's always a pleasure to stay up a little longer in order to welcome someone new in the door. meanwhile ..... Enjoy the forum and dont be a stranger.

    Cheers

    Toto

Ian, Good Morning. I fully intend to join in and offer any ideas, but I'm also hoping to glean a lot of information and ideas from the group, a little at a time. At my time in life enjoyment is a priority. In my other hobbies it becomes the reason that I pursue them. I like making people smile, laugh or have fun almost any way that I can so I take to the stage as a caller for American Square Dancing and try to cause people to have fun. Usually that is successful. Model Railroads/Railways is one of the other hobbies and takes a major slice of my time now that I am finally retired from my real job.

My layouts to this point have all been DC/Analog, however I have several N-scale American locos that are DCC ready and I have two NCE powercabs that I've not yet gotten brave enough to use. I am intrigued by DCC and on-board Sound but with the layouts the size that I build (small shelf-style) lately, there isn't a lot of need for on-board sound as I can probably get by with two speakers and sound coming from under the layout. That doesn't mean that I won't give it a go. It basically means that I'm not ready to devote the time and effort to it just yet. In answer to the question which wasn't asked, No, I don't have any experience/expertise to convey regarding the dark side. Sometimes it's all that I can do to keep the darned little things running on DC.

Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to a lot of interfacing with the group. As everyone may have noticed, I was under the impression that this was primarily an Australian-based bunch of guys... but I have now discovered that, "They're Everywhere! They're Everywhere!" Which I think is great as that means that I might even get a chance to meet a few of you someday here in the UK.

    Cheers,
    Gene

Welcome to the forum from the East Midlands Gene. A number of the UK members plus Gary and Gormo from Oz have met up on a few occasions, several model railway exhibitions and the National Railway Museum in York to mention a few, and there are plans for several of us to meet up in November at Elgin in Scotland for the model railway exhibition there. Also member Rob Pulham's Wife Chris has a railway art exhibition in August at the Shildon National Railway Museum which myself and others are intending to visit (I never need an excuse to visit the NRM!), so you'll be welcome to join us at any meetups, normally announced on the forum well in advance. Enjoy the forum, Gene.
    Keith.

Thanks Keith, I just had a trip to Scotland and I'm generally only allowed one/year as I keep bringing back their water to be consumed at my leisure. I was at the Perth show as a spectator and plan to do so again as a few other friends attend that show and already have made plans for next year. I went to the Shildon NRM Model Rail Exhibition a couple months back and plan on going again for the show in August providing that it falls at a time when I'm available. So I may see you there. Thanks for the warm welcome.

Sounds like you have a great selection of stuff going on there Gene... all very interesting reading so thanks for sharing your interests. Yes I'm only about sixteen miles south of York city centre in a tiny village next to Pocklington on the way towards Market Weighton so we have great scenery with lots of nature stuff as we are in what is called Dry Cast Chalk Valleys here in the Wolds of East Yorkshire. Indeed Yorkshire is a big place but Knaresborough isn't that far from York just up the A59 Harrogate road, so if you ever feel the urge to head into O Gauge territory there is a vibrant O Gauge club nearby at Moor Monkton which is just on your doorstep, they have a DCC and DC test track and plan to lay an O scale narrow gauge loop also. Anyway please don't let me distract you and I look forward to seeing your projects.:tophat:

York Paul, All familiar territory for me... Pocklington, Market Weighton, Barmby Moor, etc. Not many trains that way though.
If I ever get the bug for O gauge I'll give you a shout out, otherwise I'll just peruse the home page for P1 and get used to what is here for a while.

Keep Cool and get to work on those plans for a new Exhibition layout!

    Hi Gene,

Looks like you've found your feet good Sir. Keep an eye open in the Railwaymens Club section as all the details with regards meet ups and the more social side of the forum are posted in there. As mentioned above, we have quite a big meet up planned for Elgin on the first weekend of November. Many of is are booked into the Premier Inn from the Friday through to the Sunday or the Monday. Monday for me. Feel free to join the gang if you are interested. Let us know and we will keep an eye open and involve you in any plans / arrangements as they develop.

Some if us are also attending the Dundee exhibition as well which details have been posted for ( with the dates ). We will be Running Paul_i s new layout " a bridge too far ". Again, more than welcome to come up. The more help and operator volunteers the better.

    Cheers for now

    Toto

    Toto,
Unfortunately I am at a model Railway meet on the Sunday 4th November or I would plan another getaway to come up and meet you all and see if I could be of some assistance.

Now are you talking about Dundee exhibition on 13/14 October? I might be able to break free for that. I'll look into my crystal ball and see if I can make that weekend free.

Foiled again... I believe that I have a meeting (all day) in N. Yorkshire on the Saturday. If that goes away, I'll let you know.

    Cheers,
    Gene

Hi again Gene just be aware there are 'witches and goblins on here that will lure you into 'ac/dcc' and 'Oh' gauge, they can be really sneaky little devils and one in particular will persuade you to buy an 'ah dinna you know' electronicky kit .. just a heads up in case

Ian, I truly suspected that this is the case. Someone is trying to lure me into the big stuff when all I have room for is a micro-layout. The best that I can do right now is 18" X 48" (I still can't get my head around converting metric, I just need to go out and measure it with a metric stick) shunting in HO. I just need to improve the heck out of it. I know it's not finished but once you do a video of it you find out how "Not finished" it really is. Case in point is my Agony Bay Terminal, 2nd St. Yard module which I was coerced into building about five weeks before an exhibition. I ended up displaying (& operating) it as a 'Work-in-Progress'. Here is a quick video that I did during a quiet time at the exhibition. Sorry for the focus issue as I was using my Iphone. Here is a photo showing the overall module.

Hi and welcome Gene. Just had a look at your links and they are very interesting.
Its great you've got the posting lark so quickly, we generally don't get replies from new members so fast!
Anyway, enjoy your stay and keep the updates coming .

Oh yes, the nickname getting around for those who model various scales is 'Rubber Gauger' ! :avatar:
