I know this type of question has been asked many time before and is probably as easy to answer as 'how long is a piece of string', but things change over time so I thought I'd ask again. Which railway modeling magazines do you buy regularly or subscribe to and if I was going to buy a subscription for just one, which in your opinion would be best to get and why. Ed
Hi Ed, another great topic which will be great to follow and see what members read and subscribe to. Possibly like many people my tastes have changed as my skill level has moved on. The main stream magazines where all subscribed to but after a few years the same things keep reappearing and so for me, along with the increase in the advertising pages and the excessive cost of buying railway magazines in Australia, I moved on to the following, all shipped direct from the Uk bar Moving the goods, but I did send off for the back issues to complete the set. Moving The Goods, http://shop.kelsey.co.uk/product/MTG3/moving-the-goods-3-coal-energy-for-the-nation Great reference magazine, fantastic photos which I personally have not seen in any other magazine or book. Comes out quarterly, some back issues are still available from the above link, well worth buying. O Gauge Guild - members only receive the "Gazette" A great useful resource for O gauge modellers.http://www.gauge0guild.com/ Model Railway Journal. Lots of excellent layouts, modelling techniques, drawings of prototypes etc. http://titfield.co.uk/Wild-Swan/MRJ-Journal.htm As to which you should subscribe to, I would suggest that if you have chance to join a club, which has a library, it would give you the opportunity to go through as many different magazine offerings they may have to get a better idea of what best suits your interest in railway modelling (alot cheaper as well) Kim
Hi Ed I used to buy 3 magazines when I came to the hobby (Hornby, BRM, and Railway Modeller) but now some years later and living abroad I just have the one. Like Kimbo I became disillusioned with the amount of pages containing adverts but I suppose that's what keeps them going. Anyway I now only have British Railway Modeller (BRM) in digital format. Is it any better than other mags? I'm not sure. What it does though is give me a reference library and inspiration during my quiet periods (when the tinto's run out), not much help I'm afraid. Ian vt
Thanks Kim. That link for 'Moving The Goods' didn't work for me, but this one appears to. http://shop.kelsey.co.uk/product/MTG3/moving-the-goods-3-coal-energy-for-the-nation Think MRJ is a bit specialist for me and unfortunately as I have a back problem and am not very mobile, so getting to a club on a regular basis would be difficult. Good suggestion though Thanks Ian I have bought a few copies of BRM and RM in the past and one copy of Model Rail for a specific article on Catenary, but which to get regularly I take your post as one vote for BRM Ed
Thanks Ed,Link works from here in WA ?? any ways I've altered it to yours, so thanks for that. I would also agree with Ian, re BRM, and also Model Rail (not to much advertising) is worth a look toKim
Suppose my vote would go with Model Rail (after all thats where my subscription is with, along with the MERG and Scalefour membership journals. and of course this well thumbed forum Paul
I used to buy Hornby Magazine every time I was in London. In fact I started with edition 1. When I stopped going to the UK I subscribed for another year. But then the stories started repeating themselves and they stopped using Chris Nevard for the photos and the editor took over doing that. He also started building layouts instead of writing editorial content and checking the quality of the magazine and this is when the quality really dropped. They were obviously told to produce the magazine on a very small budget and it really showed. Probably the best magazine I have ever bought was the BRM 2015 Annual edition. I've looked for the 2016 version but it never appeared, which is a real shame. So if I were to spend money on a magazine it would be BRM. But I prefer to read the online forums and spend my money on rolling stock or locos from Hattons. 1 vote for BRM magazine.
Ed you have started a interesting topic I don't think there is a one Mag suits all answer as interests are so varied in the hobby. I did have a subscription to Model Rail, but like Steve noted about Hornby Mag, it too went through a period that the quality slipped badly even the quality of the paper used was poor, so I stopped subscribing, Now I don't subscribe to any of the current crop of mags but I am lucky enough to have a couple of newsagents in the area that gets them all so I will have a flick through to see if any have anything worth while, then only buy that particular issue. Saves a lot of $$/££. Plus as I'm a member of several Model/Railway groups so I get several Club mags every month, I always have some thing to look at in those. Now counting the most recent purchases of mags BRM seems to be the one Featured more regularly however the last mag I got was March 2017 Model Rail reason the section on Britain's Best Branch lines 22 locations to inspire you next layout. Best of luck with your choise Ed
Pretty even, BRM or Model Rail. Thanks for all the replies. Like Chris I’ve occasionally flicked through what’s on the shelf of the local newsagent or supermarket to see if there’s anything of interest, but the problem with that is you can easily miss an article or review if a particular issue isn’t there. The thing that puts me off BRM from the few issues I have bought is the amount of advertising, but I know that’s probably true of all magazines and it’s how they manage to continue publishing. So at present…………….. totally undecided. Ed
I'm with Chris, I go into W H Smiths and browse, if I see an article in a mag I like that's the one I buy'
Hi Ed I have a digital subscription to Railway Modeller But buy others as needed such as Model Rail, Model Railroader, Narrow Gauge Down Under , Australian Model Railroad Magazine. I have a couple of BRM issues but prefer others. With the exception of NGDU, the rest are digital Cameron
Undecided about digital as well Cameron. I find it easier to stick a bookmark in a magazine or book to get back to something, rather than scroll about the screen. I also get a bit fed up with all these organisations that assume everyone has a smart phone or tablet. I don't have either, so unless I'm sitting at my laptop I can't see any digital magazine. That said, digital subscriptions are considerably cheaper Ed
BRM is owned by Warners and the also own RMweb , which used to be a good forum about three years ago. The almighty dollar controls all.
StevePower wrote: I really appreciate your dilemma Ed and it's going to be hard to choose when on the shelves there is a choice of so many mags one of our newsagents has at least 8-10 to choose from depending on what monthly, bi monthly or 1/4ly issues are out Totally agree with Steve the Dollar is certinaly at the helm of the warner controlled hobby interests and I'm guessing most of the others as well, downunder some of our locally produced mags are still modeller focused, rather than share holder revenue makers. Narrow Gauge down under is an example. But it also is a bit on the pricy side too account for the small number of adds. Also agree BRM's. RMWeb was good but it grew too big and advertising took a very prominent position, and IMO the rivet counters that flooded it really killed the atmosphere with their, if your not to my standard you shouldn't be posting on RMWeb opinions.
I've previously had digital subscriptions for BRM and Hornby Magazine, but found both have tended to get repetitive after a while, so now don't bother. As so much information is available on the internet nowadays, it seems magazines are not really necessary, rather like newspapers as likewise, news is available 'as it happens' rather than waiting for tomorrows paper. As regards new products, I subscribe to newsletters from the likes of Hattons/Rails/Kernow etc. so know about products often before they appear in print, and the money saved by not taking magazines can go towards 'loco tokens!' Keith.
Has anyone outside the UK got the digital version of Model Rail as I'm having just a little problem/issue sorting it .. I can feel a rant coming on
