Workshop refurb... welcome to 5D The Long Shed

This area works nicely for soldering too as the wooden block makes a nice end stop to hold a part against when soldering. The bit of ply at the front makes a good surface to solder on. Oh the turntable at the back is to place models on and inspect them from all sides without touching them, I've a big turntable somewhere I need to find and another one I'll use in the spray booth... (when its made)

 

Now on the right hand end of the bench I'll bolt in the Proxxon pillar drill and also the Rexxon mopping and grinding wheels.

And now a general shot of the work bench.

 

Now the panel at the end of the bench will be cut down in width because I need to allow more light in and I also need a bit more space around the mopping wheel and the partition currently restricts movement at the moment. Now here is SWMBO's cunning plan...

the window in the background is coming out and brickwork will be cut down to floor level to be replaced with a pair of UPVc double outward opening doors, I can salvage one of these panes to replace the one that broke yesterday. The idea to install double doors will help to open the space up but mainly allow SWMBO access to her resin and paint pouring shed behind, it also makes it an attractive space for visitors and any interested party to come and look around at what we are doing. Once all the tat is cleared away from this area a small bench will be located here and this is where the air brush equipment will be installed, I will then have a proper point to paint my kits up. Now as can be seen the work bench is divided up into sections in a similar way to how a factory floor is marked up into different zones, the white paint helps to reflect light and locating small parts. The window is painted in gloss white and the work bench is painted in an eggshell flat finish, finally I'm going to install vertical blinds for privacy and to stop sun light glare and have a power point console installed along with a suspended LED ceiling light.

 

The final job in the workshop this evening was to cut away a section of that plywood partition and to add in a cill at bench top height, the result heaps more natural light and a feeling of extra space. The area behind this partition was storage for SWMBO's large abstract paintings.... (the ones she never sold ) anyway we have found a new and better place for these to live and the good news (for me anyway) is that SWMBO thinks a little portable bench table would fit nicely in, her interest is to have an extra "making" place when she starts doing her tree project, we both think this will make the perfect spot for air brush work and painting locos and rolling stock... so winner all round . The even better news is that right now the bench can be brought into use, so kit making can recommence on a basic scale until an electrician has done an upgrade with power sockets and installing a new earth breaker.

The window at the end will be removed and replaced with a pair of double outward opening UPVc doors, I can then redecorate the space and get rid of that nasty beige colour replacing it with a more conducive tone.. maybe something like a cool grey blue or grey green.

Paul the available space behind the cut down partition measures 1115 x 500mm bare in mind there will be a door on the outside wall but that isn't a problem, I had an idea of a suspended LED light unit... any thoughts about type and product?

Well the Proxxon Dividing Head was delivered this evening and here are a few pictures of it. Now I can set to drilling out 96 holes on the Class 24. Oh happy days.

Yes there is an instruction manual that comes with it and if all else fails I'll take instructions from our tutor, will probably discuss with Mr Pulham anyway, but yes I'm hoping this is a futures investment for bench projects.

 

Have I got this wrong but don't LED strips draw a lot of current?

 

We've got "Open Studios" at the end of September so I want to keep the workshop reasonably ordered for visitors to look around... with a bit of luck the only tools on the bench will be those I need to work with and kits in the building stage... that's when it gets a bit scary SWMBO will have her stuff on the other side... that's when it gets even scarier

Today or more specifically this afternoon has been another workshop reorganization day, a storage bay to hold SWMBO's rather larger abstract paintings safely was constructed, a job slightly more tricky than I'd planned but anyway once completed gained a gold seal approval award.What this has done is free up a nice little corner area which will become the painting booth for my kit builds. It will also double as the place to store my scenic materials which will be made on the other small bench at the end of the workshop.

I'm also planning on taking out this end window and replacing with outward opening double doors in UPVc, it will mean cutting down the brickwork with a stil saw. better get things sheeted over because brick dust is a killer.

And a general shot looking up into the open ceiling which will have the lighting replaced with something more suitable... for those intrigued the sad offering of a guitar eaten away with a million drill holes on the wall is SWMBO's "art"... personally I think she was just learning how to use power tools.
