I have not had any issue sending or receiving PM's.
the old PM's from the previous forum have not as far as I am aware transferred over. the new PM system ( conversations ) has been working fine for myself and I will have a look at any other members who dont. There are permission settings in the users permissions which can switch the ability to send conversations on or off. However, I am certain that all users were set to our default position which allows everyone to send and receive conversations.

This will however have to wait until I return home from work.

    Richard,

I will be more than happy to take your own position as the first to resolve. I will look into how the historical data can be retrieved. We have a complete back up of the old system so I would hope the information is retrievable. I will not be as bold as to 100% guarantee it but will inform you asap.

    many thanks.

I guess then the question is - why wasn't all data including PMs, transferred over to the new software?

Several big forums were unable to migrate to new software so you have to give Toto and Paul a big pat on the back for managing what has been achieved so far with 98% of the back forum still accessible on a completely different software platform.
    A little Patients is require
As moderator’s we have far more access than everyone else but there are thing that don’t work for us as well
I don’t have a way to create a PM but can reply just little teething issue that will be resolved as things progress
Re PM’s it may come down to the old privacy issue when accessing private messages etc
it’s not really a big deal as far as I can see, if someone had sensitive info or info that was essential it was the wrong place to keep the info anyway however I’m sure with time it can possibly be retrieved and sent to them
Given time the Forum will be 100% functional again for a week in its progressing well for such a large amount of info to have moved formats and be operational.
Don’t forget this is an extension of the Hobby and as such is being run by non web professionals we are all Model Railway hobbiests first and foremost and Toto and Paul who run the tech side have day jobs to go to as well and I believe they are doing a great job to have as much accessibility within a week as we do.

So let’s get back to the Model Railway stuff that side is basically all working Ok and the back room stuff will follow

We shall be trying to determine that Sol. We do have the original database saved intact so you can be sure that if there is any way of doing it ........ it will be done. it may not be the first issue resolved but we shall not let it go until we have exhausted every practical avenue. If it is found not possible, I will look at other steps to retrieve members individual information from the original database should the information within be that important, that would be at a time to suit the availability of Paul or I to do so and also in line with other forum priorities. I make no guarantees.

I would recommend going forward that if anyone is going to store information of any importance within their pm's or indeed your posts, that they back it up onto their own system as well. I will not be responsible for any loss.

On another similar note. copyright of images.

I cannot guarantee that people will not try and lift members images from the forum. I am currently looking at measures to see if this can be prevented. there are several options at the moment. Some more desirable than others. If you object to this potentially happening with one or several of your images, ultimately don't post them up. I am aware of the potential to watermark the images as they are being posted but will need to look into how / if that can definitely be done effectively. You could insert copyright information on your own images prior to posting.

I will look at creating a statement to inform everybody formally that members post their images on the forum for viewing on the forum only and that should you wish to use it elsewhere or / and for any other purpose modelling or otherwise, that the express consent of the owner / poster should be sought ( let this post act as active intent to that effect to anyone having accessed it so far. ). it will not stop it happening as such but at least give some grounds to pursue it if somebody wishes. Again ...... as well as a programmer, I'm not a lawyer either. using a copyright stamp may spoil the image but I think if they are that precious to you then it would be a sensible step to take. As I said, we are looking at seeing if through some magic of software wizardry we can prevent that happening here at source. I do not know the reality of that as yet but if there is and it is not financially prohibitive, I shall attempt to take all reasonable steps. otherwise revert to the other options above.

I would not like to lose members as a result of these issues but there is only so much I can realistically be expected to do, Like other forums. If my best endeavours are not enough then its up to the individual whether or not they continue to post on the forum. I would advise that they don't release any further information that they hold dear to their heart due to the forewarned potential of their information's security being breached. I don't like this any more than anyone else. I believe that we all participate in good faith and with best intentions.

    thanks for your understanding.
